UHC is a Bad Insurance Company
My wife & I had insurance through UHC. At some point, UHC decided to change how they pay our providers & put us on the hook for $3500. We've switched to Blue Cross & strongly recommend you avoid UHC.

They are shady and/or incompetent and I…
They are shady and/or incompetent and I don't know what is worse. I submit a claim to the address on the claim form and I wait. And wait. And wait. Then I call and they say it never arrived. That I should send it to a different address. I mail it to that address and wait. And call and they say they didn't get it; that I should have mailed it to the first address. I re-mail it again to the first address. Finally they pay many weeks late. Next month same thing. Then they say of course I should submit to an email address. That doesn't work either so every month I get a new answer for why they aren't paying and why I must submit and re-submit and re-submit the invoices. They are shady. They are incompetent. Try any other health insurance but this one.

How is UHC Customer Service Organized?
I signed up with UHC Medicare Advantage and additionally wanted the dental rider. When I received my confirmation email, it did not include the dental rider. I called UHC yesterday and spent 3 hours on hold and being transferred around. Today, I spent another 2 1/2 hrs on hold and was transferred TWELVE times. I simply want to BUY the rider. There is no phone number for simply purchasing Dental insurance. So, I go through their tree and each rep judiciously asks me all the same questions to verify my insurance, a few tried to get me to upgrade to another plan and others didn't quite understand I didn't need another review. I was transferred to people who were licensed for my state and who could sign me up only to learn they couldn't do the dental part, they only handled medical. Finally, the last CS Rep tried to help me and couldn't so, she put me in for a call back from someone who could help me. Three hours later, a received the call from a gentleman who explained he doesn't know anything about dental insurance and wanted to know if I would consider a different "carrier" from AARP United Health Care. I know this is their busiest time of the year but, clearly they are not staffed with people who are trained for their business. More important though, their customer service is not organized well at all! I am a retired business woman and I am currently licensed as a TN Healthcare provider. This means I am not ignorant as to how this works. I am however, completely confused about how UHC works. Someone needs to look at their organization from the user's point of view because, it makes no sense at all! Still waiting in TN for my dental rider.

Reps lack of knowledge even with the correct information
I called UHC providers customer service line to verify benefits. I was on hold for 45 mins waiting to speak with a rep. That rep then told me that I needed to call another number. I called the number and went through the automated system. I was placed on hold for about another 20 mins. Once I finally spoke with a rep, she said that she was going to transfer me to the provider line. I told her that I went through that system already. After being on the phone for 1 hour and 45 mins I finally speak to a rep that gives me the correct number. I called the number and what do you know, it was the right department, but they were closed!!

Crooks and thieve
Crooks and thieve. They willingly take your money, but dispute your claims. When you try to get clarification, they put you on hold for interminable amounts of time only to give you a claim number and ask you to check back in 30 days. After 1.5 years they will not pay a claim because they said the provider didn't provide enough information. The provider consequently did send all documents and notes and still UHC hasn't paid. Once again I am on a 30 minute hold after providing claim number, dispute number and history. After several months of this I dont expect anything different. Time to change insurance.

Do not enroll if anyone has the same name as you
In a world where there are so many checks and balances put in place to verify a patient is the correct patient. It baffles me how erroneous and incoherent United Healthcare is regarding their record keeping of their members. For 5 years my son has always had his middle name on his insurance card. He and his Grandfather share the same first and last name. However, that is where the similarities end. They have different birthdays, different middle names, and obviously different social security numbers. Despite all these differences UHC since March 2020 has been denying my son’s claims stating that he has another insurance. (Coincidentally its another UHC plan) If SOMEONE would of fact checked more than “First Name Last Name”, ANYONE I wouldn’t be receiving bill after bill because the claims are being denying. NOBODY would though, I keep calling, filing grievances, getting transferred to the escalation team. Where they all “understand” BUT no one could FIX IT. If a hospital did this and preformed the wrong procedure on a person because they only verified “first name last name” They would be sued. United Healthcare should be held to the same accountability. Short of taking a trip to corporate I have jumped through every hoop and filed every complaint and yet they still have NOT FIXED THEIR ERROR. Now I filed with NYS. HORRIBLE WHAT YOU DO TO YOUR MEMBERS!!!!
