High hopes but low coverage near pine trees
I have purchased the older collar and then upgraded to the newest version and am not satisfied with either. The older model worked ok but still lost satellite coverage pretty often in our back yard. It is moderately wooded with pine trees but not that dense. Then after having them for a year one of the collars just stopped acquiring satellites, despite our troubleshooting. We pulled the trigger and spend another $2400 on the newest version of the collars hoping that it would eliminate the satellite coverage issues, but it only made the coverage slightly better. I basically have to be outside with the dogs and have the app up to manually refresh their location in order for it to alert the dogs as they get close to the fence. I really wish it worked better for the money, it's a great concept if it actually worked near pine trees.
Response from SpotOn FenceAug 13, 2026
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re sorry that SpotOn hasn’t performed as reliably as you expected, particularly after upgrading to our newest version. We understand that tree coverage can present challenges for GPS-based technology. The SpotOn collar includes a built-in Forest Mode, which is specifically designed to help filter GPS noise caused by dense tree coverage and provide a more accurate and consistent fence line. However, we recognize that every property is different, and your experience in your pine-covered backyard clearly hasn’t met the standard we aim for. We’re also concerned to hear that you’ve felt the need to manually refresh the app to update your dogs’ locations. The SpotOn system is designed to maintain the active fence without requiring you to constantly monitor the app, so we’d welcome the opportunity to take a closer look at your specific setup and determine what may be contributing to the behavior you're experiencing. We appreciate that you gave both generations of SpotOn a chance, and especially understand your frustration after making a significant investment in the newest version. We’d like the opportunity to work with you and see if we can improve your experience.
