The nurse practioner I saw was professional and sympathetic, she took time to listen to my concerns and made good recommendations.

Unfortunately, my experience with James Barry during family therapy was extremely disappointing and, in my opinion, unprofessional. During our second session, James asked whether I could see myself eventually building a relationship with my father’s wife. I explained that I was open to that, but that my cup currently feels empty after making efforts in the past that I did not feel were reciprocated. I expressed that I would absolutely be open to moving forward if the effort could be mutual. Instead of feeling like my perspective was being explored or heard, I felt blamed for not being willing to make the first move yet again. When I disagreed and tried to clarify what I had actually said, his responses became sarcastic and dismissive, including remarks along the lines of, “Oh yeah, sure, that’s what you said,” in a tone that both my father and I experienced as mocking. What bothered me most was how the session ended. After our disagreement, James stated that he was “done” and abruptly left the Zoom call while my father and I were still sitting there. I understand that therapy isn’t always supposed to be comfortable. I’m open to being challenged, hearing a different perspective, and having difficult conversations. But there is a difference between respectfully challenging someone and becoming sarcastic or dismissive when they don’t agree with you. Family therapy requires vulnerability, and I expected the person facilitating those conversations to remain professional even when there was disagreement. Unfortunately, that was not my experience, and after this interaction, I would not return.

Though my therapist was great, lifestance itself is very problematic. Following their settlement for unlawfully violating my privacy and selling user data (lifestance pixel settlement), they've been sliding in brand new forms and contracts making it harder to sue them, and easier for them to sell your data, including protected health information, just prior to therapy or telehealth sessions. I had been a client of lifestance for several years, but today was the last day, the terms they tried to force in before I could see my therapist were just totally unacceptable.
