Appalled. Not recommended by businesses or applicants
Specialising in User Experience...I'm simply appalled. As an applicant having to use this system for the first time, I'm underwhelmed to say the least about my experience. Despite "seeing" the documents on their system that I took an extra day to submit, the system keeps prompting me for a specific document they already have. Finally I decided to resubmit the same document just to "tick their check box". I then get requests for several other documents to prove of self employment such as letter of offer, payslips. I wasn't about to create one just to satisfy another tick box despite already providing legal documents of self employment. Thought I'd try to use their "live chat" service, but get kicked out because my local time of 10am on a weekday was outside HireRight's "business hours", without providing any information as to what their business hours actually are...I contacted the company HR personnel, who advised to me ignore the (obvious) automated prompts. They've been dissatisfied with HireRight for a long time.

I have never heard of hire right before…
I have never heard of hire right before but when the company I applied for said my checks will be done by hire right I decided to read up reviews and it was so depressing. But hire right finished my checks in 2 weeks without any stress. I always went on the portal to check if they needed any document and any document I couldn’t provide I told them via live chat. Their customer service is fast and very helpful too

They do treat candidates poorly....
Vetting companies are mostly a nightmare, and they’re well known for asking a question that you’ve answered and then asking it again, and again like they’re totally, totally stupid. Some are totally stupid. They do also enjoy the power they have over candidates, which I have experienced with other vetting companies where they enjoy making it difficult for you. They also tend to conduct checks the hiring company never asked for, just to show their power.
HireRight, I must say, horrified me when I saw their reviews here and I actually had a separate offer I was going to reject but I kept it open as I feared that HireRight would make a mess of my vetting and I’d fail, even though there is nothing wrong with my career history. I was ready to walk away from a role than face incompetent behaviour from a vetting company.
But they did surprise me, and they completed checks very quickly.
They do make some BS claims, like this from their website “By thoroughly checking and verifying someone's employment history, we'll show you whether or not your applicant has the correct skills and experience for the role on offer, allowing you to make a sensible, informed decision” This is BS because ‘experience’ and ‘skills’ are different things. I’m a developer in a specialist field and someone non-specialist from a vetting company is gonna be able to say if I have the correct skills? What do they know about my specialism? Its BS.
The only downside is that are very slow in replying to emails sent to the Candidate Care email address. You even chase and they don’t reply. Once you are assigned a person of contact, then its slightly better, but not perfect. On their email they mention you can “fax” them documents and there is in fact no fax number on the email of the sender, so a little missed attention to detail there. Also when you eventually do get a reply from the Candidate Care email, they mention “live chat” but there is no link to it.
My person of contact did ignore emails, but she did in fact have a brain and was on the ball, apart from ignoring me a few times.
I know others had bad experiences, but my experience has in fact thankfully and surprisingly been not too bad. But what others say about HireRight treating candidates poorly is actually true.
I give HireRight 3/5 as they are slow on the Candidate Care email and sometimes the person of contact ignored my emails a few times.

Submitted documents they requested
Submitted documents they requested, called after they rejected all forms and they said they don't see what the problem is, then they said they can't approve and it has to go to someone who else. Asked their name so I could tell the company to not pay the invoice for service not rendered...then they automatically cleared it...resolved by hiring company, they are not impressed with their vendor and they are messing with people's lives and careers. Big joke.

It has been three weeks now
It has been three weeks now. I have provided HireRight 16 different documents. I had to supply my official transcripts and every single W2 for the last seven years. They told me that none of my previous employers replied to any outreach. I refuse to believe that so I called my previous employers who never received a call. Now I am hoping and praying that they receive and process my last doc so I can start on Monday. Currently I am on hold with them (37 minutes holding so far) to get this completed. I feel like I have done their job and they have literally done nothing. I would suggest to all employers to not use this service. They are slow, unprofessional, and an awful experience for a new employee. They offer no value.

Painful, Pedantic & Worrying
I had an incredibly smooth, responsive challenging yet brilliant interview process with Elastic only to run into HireRight after I accepted the job and signed my contract.
Completely unreasonable amounts of information and records required. You need to send them the contracts & offer letters for your last 3 jobs, your P45s from them and Payslips from current employer. Certificate of the exams you sat at school!!
You need far less information to get a mortgage. They interact with you like a faceless toddler, below is a genuine subject line, where the body of the email could not be more confusing as to what they want.
'Subject: ACTION REQUIRED - 'MyNAME' XXXXXXXXXXID - Employment Report - DO NOT REPLY'
However my main concern is for when HireRight are hacked. This single organisation now possesses more sensitive information on me than any other organisation does. If my file at HireRight got into the wrong hands, it would be bon voyage to my identity.
The worst part about all this is, it doesn't seem to matter that they offer this horrific service, employers get what they want and that is HireRights customer at the end of the day and they do not care about anyone else.

I wouldn't trust HireRight to confirm that the sky is blue or that water is wet
Because this isn't my first rodeo I figured that I would proactively upload my first and last pay statement for my most recent position when I submitted the information for the background check.
For 4 days, crickets. Then I get a message: "We cannot verify your most recent employment. Please submit 1099, or pay statements." Submitted the statements again, together with a copy of the offer letter for the position that clearly shows the legal company name and the dba name.
Another week of crickets.
Another message: "you say that you worked for x. Your pay statements say you worked for y. Please submit evidence that you worked for x, such as an indication that x is the dba name of y."
Response: "all of the information you have requested has been submitted - here are the file names of the uploads. If you can't be bothered to pick up the phone and confirm my employment with the previous employer then that's your damage." Copied the hiring manager and HR at the new company on my response.

From a candidate's perspective...
From a candidate's perspective, HireRight is one of the worst obstacles in the application process.
They are in-cre-dib-ly slow while also spamming the candidate with uncoordinated requests almost on a daily basis, instead of requesting the documents at once and bundled.
Also they are notoriously unresponsive and plain rude.
