The products failed, customer support is atrocious
a few years ago I purchased a My Book Duo with 2 x 3TB drives in RAID 1 configuration. 1-I was never able to get into the WD drive utility (Despite conversations with support). 2- One drive eventually failed. There was a red light on it, and I searched for the user manual online, but it is missing from the website. 3- Despite multiple conversations, the first few people were unable to help me access the WD drive utility, and the only way cust support knew how to help with my RAID 1 drives was via this Utility software. Despite me having un-installed and re-installed the software 3 times that day, we did it once more so he could satisfy himself that I had done it right - and was audibly surprised to find that he couldn't do it either. (WD - don't assume your customers are simpletons. it irritates them) After that, he didn't know what to do, and even suggested that I uninstall and re-install it again despite having done nothing to change anything that would make it now successful. I asked how that might help given I had done it 3x and he had done it once more. He wouldn't answer. He fumbled a bit and passed me to a "level 2" support person. Before doing so, it became obvious part of his confusion was that he couldn't navigate on an apple computer and admitted he was strictly a PC user so didn't know what to do). 4- Level 2 technician Gary was able to suggest a way to access the drive. by using a second laptop. Great. I was able to move onto rebuilding the drive. I purchased a new drive, installed, and rebuilt it. Rebuild failed. TWICE. I now own 4 WD red drives. All on suggestions from customer support. And now, his much delayed response is to purchase yet ANOTHER drive because in his world, clearly the 2 new drives were faulty. I asked why his assumption was that the new drives were faulty and why not the enclosure. He refused to answer. I've asked this question 3 times, but with no response and the continued pressure to keep purchasing new drives it feels like either they haven't a clue what they are doing, or are just trying to increase sales. WD you have permanently lost this customer. I've wasted nearly $1000 on this one issue and you still can't give me a straight answer. or provide substantive help to do the most basic of operations for this enclosure - rebuild a drive.
