Giving 1 star because that is the…
Giving 1 star because that is the lowest they would allow. I spent 2 days and several hours trying to find out if I could purchase special event insurance for my grandbaby's birthday party. I was transferred to 5 different people today and that does not include the people I had to speak with yesterday. The last person I spoke with was so unkind and short with me. When I matched her energy she barked at me to calm down and told me I was lying when I said how much time I had already spent on the phone. I hope she has the day she deserves. If you want good customer service, I would avoid this insurance company.

Erroneous Collection and Cancelation Notice
Just spent 1 hour, 20 minutes being shuffled around to different departments. Erroneously received an email that my insurance was CANCELED and I had to pay $860 or be sent to collections. I thought it was a scam because my payments are automatically withdrawn from my bank account. When I logged on to Hartford, all it showed was an up-to-date account. My mail showed repeated thank-you emails for my autopayments being received. After more than an hour, and speaking to more than 5 different agents, they figured out that I supposedly owed for an audit of my account. I explained that nothing is showing as owed on my account and they acknowledged that the system did not reflect the owed funds, unless you look in the Audits dropdown. They said I moved from direct billing to X-Pay and that's the problem. They never billed me for the audit until they sent me the CANCELATION AND COLLECTION NOTICE. Horrible system and worse customer service. If I had the time, I would refer this to the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance.

General liability insurance for a start…
I signed up with the Hartford for general liability insurance for a start up business. The first year premium was $1589. The Hartford sent me a policy renewal for $2979, almost double the first year premium. I called in and after at least an hour on the phone they said they would discount the premium $400, still a substantial increase so I cancelled my policy. They make you fill out an audit to see if they owe you any money or you owe them based on the policy. The audit said I owed them $146 because my revenue increased? When I filled out the audit I didn't increase the amount of revenue because as a start up the business operated at a loss. Typical insurance company crap, they don't care about you, your business and only about the premiums they collect. When I called in to refrute the audit I was on permahold for over an hour. I hate this company!!!!!!!!
State Farm did a common sense underwrite on my business for a general libility policy for under $1000.

I've been with the Hartford for over 5…
I've been with the Hartford for over 5 years now. Like many insurance companies, I switched to lower my auto insurance costs. I also have my home insurance with them. Despite not having a single claim on my house or auto, my rates have creeped up over the years. Like most people, I cringe and pay the bill. One of reasons I went with the Hartford is that they initially gave me a decent deal for having a good driving record. Unfortunately, after each year of no claims, instead of some sort of discount, I just get charged more.
One thing I did like is that I could put the cost on my credit card. This helped me manage cash flow. This year I was quite surprised that they wanted to charge me 3 percent more to use my credit card. I know what they will say about this. Everyone's doing it and we have to find ways to cut costs. I reject that argument and find it just another way to charge me more.

The Hartford’s handling of leave claims…
The Hartford’s handling of leave claims is one of the most dehumanizing experiences I have ever encountered.
At a time when families are dealing with grief, confusion, and legal paperwork, The Hartford appears to rely heavily on outsourced customer service systems and AI-driven claim handling that create unnecessary barriers instead of support. Representatives often seem poorly trained on even basic leave law distinctions, including the fact that FMLA generally does not apply to grandparents except under very limited “in loco parentis” circumstances. Yet claims and communications continue moving through what feels like an automated bureaucracy with little accountability or meaningful human review.
In my case, a claim was canceled when it should not have been. Rather than correcting the issue internally or reopening the existing file, I was told the entire process had to begin again from scratch while actively grieving. There appeared to be no reasonable escalation path, no continuity of case management, and no mechanism for equitable reconsideration. The experience felt procedurally indifferent and administratively reckless.
The broader concern is systemic: when insurance and leave administration companies over-rely on outsourcing, algorithmic decision-making, and fragmented call-center structures, they risk violating the spirit — if not the intent — of consumer protection and fair claims handling principles. Companies managing protected leave and disability-related matters should understand that people contacting them are often experiencing death, illness, caregiving crises, or financial instability. They are not support tickets.
I genuinely feel for many of the frontline employees because they often sound overwhelmed themselves and are likely operating under impossible productivity metrics while simply trying to support their own families. The problem appears institutional, not individual.
Something needs to change regarding oversight, accountability, claim reopening procedures, and humane treatment standards in the leave-management industry. No bereaved person should have to fight an opaque administrative system just to receive competent handling of a claim.
