Because our recipes are made with fresh, natural ingredients without artificial preservatives, any small tear or crushed corner that exposes the food to outside air can cause mold to form. Hi Lucinda Thank you for reaching out! That is a great question, and it is a very common point of confusion when comparing fresh food to dry kibble. The reason our guaranteed analysis lists protein between 5.5% and 7% on the carton is because our fresh food naturally contains 76% to 77% moisture. Kibble, on the other hand, has almost no moisture (usually around 10%), which makes its protein number look much higher at first glance on the label. To compare two foods fairly, you have to look at them on a Dry Matter Basis—which measures the nutrient levels after removing all moisture. When you convert Happy Howl to a Dry Matter Basis, our actual protein percentages range between 24% and 30%, which is right in line with—or higher than—premium dry kibbles! Here is the exact breakdown for each of our recipes, comparing both Wet Matter (As Fed) and Dry Matter: • Lamb Delight Wet Matter: 5.5% Protein | 3.5% Fat | 1% Fiber | 76% Moisture Dry Matter: 24% Protein | 16% Fat | 3.3% Fiber • Beef Stew Wet Matter: 6% Protein | 3% Fat | 1.5% Fiber | 77% Moisture Dry Matter: 28% Protein | 16% Fat | 3.8% Fiber • Turkey Feast Wet Matter: 7% Protein | 3% Fat | 1% Fiber | 76% Moisture Dry Matter: 30% Protein | 14% Fat | 2.3% Fiber How the quick math works if you ever want to compare other brands: Subtract the moisture percentage from 100% to get the Dry Matter percentage. Divide the labeled protein percentage by that Dry Matter percentage.
