Computer says "no", staff fail to keep promises
I placed an order for the SNES classic console in early July. Unfortunately in late August I had to move house unexpectedly. I logged into my Tesco account and attempted to change the delivery address, this was not possible, despite the console not being released until a month later on 29th September. I called Tesco customer Services and was told that it was impossible to change the address, I was offered a cancellation, however as the item is limited edition and already commands over 100% markup on the secondary market I was not prepared to do this. Frustrated that a simple change of address is seemingly impossible, a classic case of ‘computer says no’, I tweeted and e mailed Tesco asking for the address change to be made. I was reassured repeatedly in the responses I received that if I called when the Tesco notification of dispatch came through the address could be changed in transit. The promises reassured me that I would receive the item at my new address. On September 27th I telephoned Tesco in anticipation of the release date/dispatch notification. I spoke to a chap in the call centre who was really helpful. He told me that the likely courier was Royal Mail and that he understood the item and the difficulty in obtaining one. He stated that he would track the parcel and ensure that it came to my new address. He told me he was working all week and wouldn’t let the parcel go without changing the address. He promised me that he would call me to confirm that this would happen. I have postal redirect set up so being told that the courier being Royal Mail was reassuring as even if the parcel address had not been changed, it would have redirected to me anyway. On September 28th I had had no update but I had received a dispatch notice from Tesco, I called back and spoke to a lady who said that the courier was UK Mail, not Royal Mail, she also advised that she would call the courier, arrange for delivery to my new address and call me back promptly if there were any issues with this. This person did not call me back. On September 29th I received an email from DPD (who are neither Royal mail nor UK Mail) advising me that they had my parcel, I selected the ship to shop option to ensure my parcel went to a location where I could collect it. I received notification that my parcel would be delivered to the pickup shop on Saturday 30th September. Later that day I received a photograph of the letterbox at my old address from DPD who had just tried to deliver to my old address. I called DPD who promised delivery on Saturday as planned to the pickup shop. This did not happen. I telephoned on Saturday and was told it would be delivered on Monday 2nd October to the DPD pickup shop, this did not happen. On Tuesday 3rd October after chasing DPD in the morning my parcel was finally delivered to the pickup shop. To summarise, • Despite knowing a month in advance that my address had changed the simple customer requirement to change that delivery address could not be met. • Tesco call centre staff consistently make promises they don’t keep, and provide information that is inaccurate. • DPD are unable to follow their own processes, and as a result of mismanagement from Tesco, and ignoring my online requests and phone calls before Tuesday they only attempted to deliver the parcel to the one place I DIDN’T want it to go. I found their processes and system to be insufficient to meet modern consumer needs, I found the staff to be pleasant for the duration of the call but unable to perform their role competently or truthfully and as a first time Tesco Direct customer this is an experience that means I will not use their service again. I complained to Tesco via facebook and they apologised but their tone was that they considered the matter closed as I had received my parcel. I asked if this was really the extent of their response, they replied that my feedback had been "documented" I would rate this experience as poor, the online marketplace is unforgiving and this sort of amateur operation will not provide a solid platform for their business.
