Kind of expensive. If someone steals your dog and never takes it to the Vet, you may not find your pet again.

Technically what you say is true - if your pet's microchip isn't scanned, it would not be identified as yours and returned to you. But, fortunately there are also a lot of good people out there who find pets and take the steps necessary to get their microchips scanned and to help get them back home to their families.

Not sure if PetKey is that good or not but that is the vendor in witch my Kennel had my pup chipped. It was an easy process to register the pup though. We’ll see what the future holds for quality of PetKey.

I love this service. I see their alerts for missing pets in my area come across frequently. Hopefully I will never need that, but I feel good that I have my cat chipped. Every pet should have a microchip.
