Ketamine can be a Vital Part of Treatment
I was not sure what to expect at first, and I was not sure how to track progress or even what I wanted from Joyous treatment. I knew that Ketamine was being more widely used for depression treatment and I felt that my current medication regimen was leaving something out. I have been on 3 medications for the last 6 years and my mood has been stable but also somewhat numb and sometimes reminiscent of when I was at my lowest. I used Joyous as prescribed and combined it with mindfulness meditation and yoga - things I only recently started doing. I never achieved full dissociation, which is not the point or aim of micro dosing, but I did notice elevated mood, openness, and less anxiety. On top of this, ketamine is almost an "instant" antidepressant, even in micro dose form. This is a double edged sword, as it can be tempting to reach for more when your mood dips. However, as someone with addictive tendencies the feeling was completely different from substance abuse. I did not "crave" more, I simply felt like sometimes one dose hadn't done enough. I was not sure exactly how treatment was going until a couple of months ago when I washed all the troches in a shirt and was out of medicine for 3 weeks. In the 3 weeks without medication, I noticed that many of the feelings I had while taking my dose were still there and part of me, like I was an actual complete person. This is what convinced me to actually start the process of closing my subscription. Without the medication I was more open, more receptive to my own feelings, more of myself. I do believe the neuroplasticity claims have merit, I do feel like the medication has done what the research suggests. Still, mental health is work, it is a journey, and I still have a lot of work ahead of me, but I do think that Joyous was a necessary part of that journey.
