Bad Rental Experience with El Monte
We had a RV rental from El Monte and we returned few days ago at El Montes RV station (actually it was Art´s RV ... and I guess they were in charge of El Monte only) in Chicago.
On our way we had a flat tire (can happen) and we found a repair shop on our way (lucky)
The guy in the repair shop told us that these tire shouldn´t have been on a rental car because its more than done and in bad condition. Fortunately they were able to patch it and so we paid 45 US$ and continued our trip. When we returned the RV in Chicago, the Lady there asked us to pay 350 US$ additionally for a new tire. Her argument: When you rented the RV, the Tire was okay and you have to return it in the original condition. I told her that the original condition was very bad, I will not pay anything, leave the station now and if she wants, she can call the police and we can discuss further. Now she was very friendly and said that she will report the case to El Monte and they shall decide and contact me directly.
Arrived home, I found an e-mail from her. She wrote:
I wanted to inform you that El Monte RV has reviewed the paperwork I sent and agrees that you should not have been charged for the tire. We understand that this situation has been frustrating for you, and we sincerely regret the error. At Art’s RV, we take our responsibilities seriously, and we want to assure you that your unit has been thoroughly inspected. The proper adjustments have been made to meet the high standards our customers expect.
All fine now? I assume that she wanted to rip us (nice try) and I am pretty sure that the next client was sent out with the old patched and inadequate tire. I pretend that this is a crime and can - at least - destroy a family holiday ... But its only my assumption.
There were some more issues in the RV:
- The board which shows the condition of Gas/Battery, Grey-Water, Black Water did not work. The indication was always "Full" (4 light bulbs) - That prevented us to use the cheaper State Parks with no Hook-UP, so we lost some money because of the bad condition of this RV
- The table in the middle always broke down when we drove (it was easy to fix once we were on the camp sites)
- Although we booked full kitchen and sleeping equippment, the equippment was pretty poor (only thin blankets what could be a disadvantage near the Lake Superior in beginning of June ...)
- According our contract, the model of RV should have been 2023/2024. The car was obviously older and had almost 60000 miles.
We will neverd book El Monte again. We sent them our complaint 2 weeks ago but no answer yet.

Very disappointing experience with El Monte RV
We rented a camper for about three weeks and encountered several serious technical issues:
- The bed was only partially usable for over 9 days.
-For more than a week, essential systems (fridge, shower, toilet, lights) did not work due to a faulty battery.
-On the last 2 days, the RV became completely undriveable – we had to organize alternative transportation ourselves, including two instances of hitchhiking and a train ride.
For each issue we had to visit a repair shop during the trip, which caused further delays and inconvenience.
Despite contacting customer service multiple times, we received no proper response to our formal complaint. Our follow-up messages were ignored, and we were ultimately forced to involve a formal dispute resolution body to pursue our case.
Eventually, we noticed a partial refund was issued without any explanation. This amount merely covered the transportation costs and some of the direct expenses caused by the vehicle’s failures.
Customer service and post-trip handling were highly unprofessional. Sadly, we cannot recommend El Monte RV based on this experience.

it was everything we expected and needed
The staff were very kind and eager to help and did everything in their power to make us feel welcome.
The RV was in an acceptable state for a rental. Of course a rental is never perfect, but we had no issues that are worth mentioning, we felt safe and comfortable and had everything we needed. We would choose El Monte anytime again!
