For some, an essential service during a trying time
I have struggled with things like depression, anxiety and lack of motivation throughout my adult life but ultimately never sought to address them. It was the usual reasons: denying the issue, thinking I didn't have the time or couldn't afford it, believing I could just will my way out of the negative moments. But the reality for me was that they never went away and I had to face up to the fact that nothing would change if I did nothing about it. I tried the free local NHS 'Talking Therapies' service, which uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques. It was okay, some poor sessions followed by some decent ones, but ultimately time limited to 6 weeks and feeling under pressure to say you're 'fine' now as a result. If you have longstanding issues, then that probably won't work for you either. So, after a while of internally debating the issue I finally decided to bite the bullet with BetterHelp, and I'm grateful that I did. You set your criteria for the type of therapist you would like to be matched with, both professional and personal, and then the service will match you either to a specific therapist or give you a shortlist to choose from. My first therapist looked a great fit but I only realised after that he didn't offer video calls (you get one a week). The service is very flexible about you changing and you don't have to explain why to your current therapist, but mine was very understanding in any case. You also don't pay anything until you start messaging your therapist, so you can take a little time at the beginning to make your choice. I was matched with another therapist, who has remained so ever since. He is a qualified, accredited professional therapist of over 40 years experience and I couldn't be happier with my experience with him. Put it this way - I was intent on trying the service out for a month and moving on, but I have stuck with it for 5 months so far and do not intend on leaving anytime soon. I decided that my mental health was as worthy as a gym membership or takeaway junk food and have committed happily to a positive therapy experience for the foreseeable future. I have even recommended my therapist to a relative based purely on my debrief conversations with my relative giving them encouragement. There are 3 tiers of subscription ranging from weekly to quarterly, with the average weekly cost dropping with each tier, but you'll have to pay the bulk amounts with the monthly and quarterly of course - which is what I do. I have had pleasant surprises where I rated one of my sessions as being slightly less useful than normal purely because I didn't do the preparatory work for it that week and the BetterHelp service team granted me a free week to make up for the lost week (even though it was my own fault!). I have been very impressed by the therapy, the ease of using the app and website, and the service overall. If you're on the fence and are stuck during the pandemic anyway then I strongly recommend that you give it a go. We often don't hesitate to do and pay for self destructive things but seemingly hesitate to do something for our own mental benefit :)
