Mixed experience
I signed up for BetterHelp because I was feeling low, empty, unmotivated, because I procrastinated wildly at work and was struggling with emotional eating. BetterHelp paired me up with a UK therapist who came across very likeable and empathic; in the first sessions I had with her, she made very many good suggestions and showed kindness and practical sense. However, I eventually cancelled my subscription because I couldn't shoulder it financially any longer. However, I still had nearly a full month paid for. I told my therapist that I had cancelled, but would like to take advantage of BetterHelp for the rest of the month until my subscription ran out. From the moment I told her my membership was going to run out in four weeks, she totally lost interest and became super slow to reply. We had one single therapy session at the beginning of my last paid-for month, and at the end of it, she said quick goodbyes, wished me all the best for my life and was off. I was taken aback (and not thinking on my feet because we had just come out of a therapy session that was very emotional for me, I was still crying), so I wrote to her after, in a state of great vulnerability, saying that I still had three weeks on my plan and asking if she could fit me in for further sessions. I felt too vulnerable after those abrupt goodbyes to just sign up for one of the free slots on her schedule - maybe I should have, but that's the thing with psychological issues, you sometimes aren't your own best advocate, which they should know at BetterHelp! She just replied it had been lovely to meet and that she wished me the best for the future. I no longer dared to follow up. So basically I wasted a lot of money on that last month, getting nothing but a highly emotional session that left me reeling emotionally, followed by what felt like a refusal of support. I have been trying to rationalize this - maybe she was super busy and didn't read my messages properly? But either way, it shouldn't be the patient who makes excuses for the therapist treating them neglectfully. Disappointing ending to what began as a good experience; it left me feeling very vulnerable and afraid to seek help elsewhere.
