The color variation you saw comes from the garment dyeing process Comfort Colors uses, where the shirts are dyed after they're sewn to create that vintage look, which can lead to slight differences from piece to piece. On the hem, the raw, unfinished edge is actually an intentional part of that cropped style rather than a mistake, and it's shown that way in the product photos.
