Buyer Beware
I purchased 2 tickets from Manila to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines on 24 May 2025. This was to coincide with my arrival in Manila on Gulf Air, and selected a flight that provided me ample time to connect between flights. Only 4 days later, Malaysia Airlines emailed me a notification that they had cancelled the flight and had rebooked me on a flight over 2 hours earlier providing me only 1 hour 20 minutes to connect between flights. They provided me 3 choices – full refund, accept the flight, or reschedule the flight. I contacted Malaysia Airlines to ascertain if that was sufficient time to connect between the flights and was advised only 1 hour was required. On that basis, I accepted the change. What they did not bother to tell me was that Gulf Air arrives in terminal 3 and Malaysia Airlines departs from terminal 1 in Manila. I consulted with a friend who knows Manila airport well who advised me there was 0% chance of him making the connection as there is no inter terminal transfer within the security area of the airport. Making the terminal transfer requires you to go through customs and immigration in terminal 3, then take an inter-terminal shuttle that operates every 30 minutes to terminal 1 through heavy Manila traffic, then pass through immigration again at terminal 1. He advised that a minimum of 3 hours was required. I then went online and found the same information. Minimum 3-4 hours is required. The basis on which I accepted the change was based on false information provided by Malaysia Airlines. Even though they had clearly provided me false information, after contacting Malaysia Airlines multiple times, I was told each time that he had accepted the change, and a refund or further change would incur full penalties. They offered me approximately $60 in refund on $400 worth of tickets, or would charge me approximately $160 to change to a flight the following day without offering any accommodation in Manila, ignoring the fact that their flight cancellation was what instigated this disruption to begin with. As I found out subsequently, Malaysia Airlines is renowned for cancelling flights when their passenger loads are not high enough. Buyer beware - do not fly Malaysia Airlines.
