Worst banking experience ever in 40+ years
Over the past (40) years I've lived all over the country and dealt with numerous banks, large and small. I have never before experienced the incompetence, lack of customer service, rudeness and deliberate misinformation as I've repeatedly encountered at First Horizon Bank, Berclair Branch. Escalation of any issues at the Branch level is impossible, because the Branch Manager is the worst offender. I've also tried to escalate these complaints to FHB Customer Solutions Group; left several voice messages, but received no response. If you're looking for a bank with competent employees, who understand what real service means, and treat you like a valued customer, this is NOT the bank for you. I strongly recommend you look elsewhere.
Two personal experiences.
ANNUITY
An employee identified as an "annuities expert" tried to sell me an annuity that I didn't even qualify for. When I asked questions about the ROI for the 3-year annuity, they didn't know how to calculate ROI, I'm not sure they knew what ROI means. In a very demeaning tone, they replied that I didn't understand, I was just confused, they would draw me a picture. I replied that I didn't need a picture just answers. I later found out that my financial info had been sent to an annuity servicing company, without my knowledge or permission.
INTEREST RATES
To maintain interest rates on my money market account, I had to call the branch at predefined intervals (30/60/90 days), and request the rate be adjusted. If I didn't initiate that call, the interest rate automatically dropped to the base savings rate. Which, in retrospect, and based on my own experiences listed below, resembles a scam or at least a deliberate deception.
Over the last 12+ months, I've made that call multiple times as directed with the following results:
> Employees confirmed the rate updates, but the actual updates were never applied.
> When I questioned why the updates weren't applied, I was repeatedly told, “You never called. You never spoke to anyone. Your accounts were never touched. So the interest rate was dropped automatically.”
> I have detailed notes of dates, names, AND the new interest rate and expiration date for each call (that never occurred). When I tried to escalate to the Branch Manager, I pointed out the only way I could know the new rate and expiration date was if I'd talked to someone at the Branch. That fact was deliberately ignored and the refrain was repeated, “You never called, never spoke to anyone . . .” I'm still not sure whether this was incompetence or a deliberate deception.
> It became very clear that this behavior would continue and why not? Inability to escalate meant there were no consequences to the Branch, only to the customer, which obviously was not a concern. When the manager stated that she had never talked to me before about these problems; I replied that I had proof of the conversations because I was now recording my calls to the Branch for obvious reasons. I tried to point out that since Tennessee is a one-party consent state, it is legal to record your own calls WITHOUT the other person's knowledge or permission. In addition, my phone plays a message to all parties that the call is being recorded. She became irate and defensive, and insisted she knew that recording was not allowed. Skipping over numerous details, I have to believe I'm not the only customer who has been treated this way. The behavior is much too blatant to be a “one customer thing”.
As a lowly customer, I can't fix the significant problems at FHB Berclair Branch and FHB in-house escalation has been impossible. However I can certainly provide reviews of their behavior that has affected me personally. And now I have the recordings to prove it, regardless of misinformation coming from the Branch.

Won't Pay My Welcome Bonus
I opened a First View checking account at the Mount Juliet,
Tennessee branch on May 13, 2026. The bank offered a $450
bonus if I made direct deposits in the amount of $2000 within the
first 90 days. The bank also offered another bonus in the amount
of $250 for opening a corresponding savings account in the
amount of $5000 or more.
I met these requirements to receive a total of $700. However, as
of October 5, 2026 I have not received the bonuses. I have
contacted the bank several times and have spoken to at least 3
different employees. They keep telling me the bank is
investigating my dispute but I am frustrated with them at this
point.
I want to point out that my wife opened the same checking and
savings account at the same time that I did. She received her
bonus money on August 12, 2026 without a problem. For some
reason First Horizon Bank hos not honored their duty to pay the
advertised bonus to me.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to
hearing from you as soon as possible.

I wouldn't use First Horizon.
I can't say whether First Horizon is bad or not, however, when they merged with Iberiabank, they told Iberiabank credit card holders, nothing would change. Things were okay at first, because we still used the Iberiabank portal to get our statements and pay the credit card electronically through that portal. Fast forward about 2 years, First Horizon force credit card holders over to their website, and the only "electronic banking" access credit card only holders had, was to get their CC statements. We lost the ability to pay the credit card electronically via our external bank account. First Horizon's answer to this was to tell us, just use us for your banking. That might work if I lived in Tennessee, but I don't and there are no First Horizon branches anywhere where I live. The merger has been completed for at least 6 years now in 2026, and FH still doesn't offer a way for non-bank account holders to pay their credit cards electronically via their website. Heck, my credit union can't even do an ACH transfer with them, they have to mail a physical check to Memphis, TN, and FH admits the mail service in Memphis is grossly delayed. Meantime, the check that my bank mailed 15 days ago, still hasn't posted to my CC account because FH claims they don't have it yet.
It's gotten so bad, I'm seriously considering shutting down my CC account with them and not use them again. I've been complaining about the lack of an online bill pay option for credit card only holders for at least 6 years and I get the same answer too, "we're working on it".

Alcoa staff have been good to me. The website keeps fighting me.
I opened my account at the First Horizon branch in Alcoa, Tennessee on 05/30/2025. I have read the reviews on this page. A lot of people had a bad time. I am not calling them liars. I am saying that has not been my experience with the staff.
Every time I have gone inside that Alcoa branch the people have been friendly. I can walk in, ask for a withdrawal, and it is done. No attitude. No drama. Nobody has been rude to me there.
What I like about the bank itself:
They print your debit card the same day you open the account.
They offer a protection that does not let the account overdraft.
I can log in on my phone or online and turn my card on or off instantly.
What I do not like:
When I opened the account they put my full birth name on the card, middle name and all, without asking. I go by Anthony W. Ford, Jr. No other bank has done that to me. A full legal name on a debit card makes identity theft easier than it needs to be. I asked them to change it. They did, and they were kind about it.
The systems are the weak part. There have been down times where I could not get into my account, on my phone and even inside the bank. I was not mad. It was an inconvenience. The website is another problem. It gives me false login information and then forces me to reset my password. I just had to reset it again. This is not a one-time thing. It keeps happening.
I cannot speak for Fort Myers or Plano or a bonus offer I never signed up for. I can speak for Alcoa. The people in that branch have treated me right. That is why I still bank there, and that is why this is four stars instead of one.
