Worst banking experience ever in 40+ years
Over the past (40) years I've lived all over the country and dealt with numerous banks, large and small. I have never before experienced the incompetence, lack of customer service, rudeness and deliberate misinformation as I've repeatedly encountered at First Horizon Bank, Berclair Branch. Escalation of any issues at the Branch level is impossible, because the Branch Manager is the worst offender. I've also tried to escalate these complaints to FHB Customer Solutions Group; left several voice messages, but received no response. If you're looking for a bank with competent employees, who understand what real service means, and treat you like a valued customer, this is NOT the bank for you. I strongly recommend you look elsewhere. Two personal experiences. ANNUITY An employee identified as an "annuities expert" tried to sell me an annuity that I didn't even qualify for. When I asked questions about the ROI for the 3-year annuity, they didn't know how to calculate ROI, I'm not sure they knew what ROI means. In a very demeaning tone, they replied that I didn't understand, I was just confused, they would draw me a picture. I replied that I didn't need a picture just answers. I later found out that my financial info had been sent to an annuity servicing company, without my knowledge or permission. INTEREST RATES To maintain interest rates on my money market account, I had to call the branch at predefined intervals (30/60/90 days), and request the rate be adjusted. If I didn't initiate that call, the interest rate automatically dropped to the base savings rate. Which, in retrospect, and based on my own experiences listed below, resembles a scam or at least a deliberate deception. Over the last 12+ months, I've made that call multiple times as directed with the following results: > Employees confirmed the rate updates, but the actual updates were never applied. > When I questioned why the updates weren't applied, I was repeatedly told, “You never called. You never spoke to anyone. Your accounts were never touched. So the interest rate was dropped automatically.” > I have detailed notes of dates, names, AND the new interest rate and expiration date for each call (that never occurred). When I tried to escalate to the Branch Manager, I pointed out the only way I could know the new rate and expiration date was if I'd talked to someone at the Branch. That fact was deliberately ignored and the refrain was repeated, “You never called, never spoke to anyone . . .” I'm still not sure whether this was incompetence or a deliberate deception. > It became very clear that this behavior would continue and why not? Inability to escalate meant there were no consequences to the Branch, only to the customer, which obviously was not a concern. When the manager stated that she had never talked to me before about these problems; I replied that I had proof of the conversations because I was now recording my calls to the Branch for obvious reasons. I tried to point out that since Tennessee is a one-party consent state, it is legal to record your own calls WITHOUT the other person's knowledge or permission. In addition, my phone plays a message to all parties that the call is being recorded. She became irate and defensive, and insisted she knew that recording was not allowed. Skipping over numerous details, I have to believe I'm not the only customer who has been treated this way. The behavior is much too blatant to be a “one customer thing”. As a lowly customer, I can't fix the significant problems at FHB Berclair Branch and FHB in-house escalation has been impossible. However I can certainly provide reviews of their behavior that has affected me personally. And now I have the recordings to prove it, regardless of misinformation coming from the Branch.
