As a person who’s used this app over the last 5 years of my life, I’m shocked! I’ve paid the monthly fee multiple times to help them stay afloat yet it still locks me out. Customer service is gone. It’s actually quite sad 😞 if you’re in groups on fb look out for some of the people creating a similar app to allow us to connect again.

ABSOLUTE SCAM. NOT EVEN THE SHADOW OF WHAT COUCHSURFING WAS MEANT TO BE!! Been contributing to Couchsurfing since 2012, had a direct debit set in 2015. Didn't like the twist the company took and canceled it after last year renewal, through the site, after not using for a good couple of years. This year they took the fee again, two days later tried to go online to cancel it again while opening a claim on Paypal because I already canceled it last year. I cannot access online account because there is another request for mandatory money just to go past to the account!

I'm shocked to see so much negativity about a wonderful company that's really enriched my travel experiences. Granted I'd already paid for verification when COVID hit, which is what I gather this is about. But get this people: IT'S NOT ABOUT GETTING A FREE BED! Couchsurfing is about really meeting locals and immersing yourself in the culture, and I LOVE it for this!

*UPDATE: Support refunded my verification fee, so might be still legit. My account and all information on it is still locked behind the paywall so still no chance to get all my contacts back. Letting them delete my account now. Turned into an absolute SCAM! I got a renewal message for verification. I tried for at least an hour to get it cancelled but the links provided only put me into a loop. So the renewal payment took place anyway. Now I tried to login to my account I get a message I need a subscription to be able to login! So, on top of my (unwanted) verification fee I have to pay even more to MAYBE be able to stop my verification subscription! Someone seems very determined to milk this cow to death, completely destroying a once great community.

I had an account on this site long ago & it was free. That was the entire basis of the concept. I went on there at the suggestion of a friend to not only find that you now have to PAY to even view the site ($2.39), but when I went to verify my account it asked me to enter my card information & in no way made it clear that you would be charged for this. I thought it was only to verify payment information & identity, but right after I entered the info I received a bank notification that I had been charged 60 freaking dollars!!! And they have a no refund policy! This is straight up robbery, I in no way authorized $60 & would never just to verify an account! Do not support this greedy scammy turned company!

I am still a couchsurfing fan. I carefully read their blog posts regarding the new member fee. It was not the best way to block all of the profiles all of a sudden, I have to admit, I can understand that this is a little shocking but I also understand that they were desperate and really needed money. Now some complain in their reviews, that they are on couchsurfing because it is supposed to save money and should be entirely free, because they don't have money. But this is not exactly the point. Of course it is nice to save money but it's not like a free hotel. It is about the community. Travelling with very low budget and 100% depending on couchsurfing is not a good idea and also not a good attitude. Also, CS has tried to become a non profit, but they weren't officially accepted as a non profit organization. So don't complain about that either, I really think it is not their fault. That's why they had to become for profit. And it is very expensive to run such an international platform. I am still happy to be part of it. And I am surfing very rarely, I actually enjoy being a host for cool surfers. :-)
