I had reservations about buying a mini split ac system online and installing it myself but am now happy that I did.
We have a three story house in Seattle that has been in real need of an AC system for some time. Two local contractors provided estimates, one for adding central ac and a new furnace for $15,000 + and the other for a Mitsubishi mini split system for $15000+. Finding these prices unaffordable and after an online search for the equipment suggested for my application and company reviews, I ordered a quad mitsubishi system 36,000 btu. from comfort up. Since I had some free time and carpentry - mechanical experience I decided to do the major part of the installation myself. I dealt with two customer reps at comfort up who were excellent. This is not to say there weren't a couple of goofs made in the order but the people were caring and made every effort to make it right. The installation took about 10 days of my time, ordering, running parts, picking up several tools and putting the pieces together. I did order line sets from comfort up but if done again would just get them locally as I think they are available in most cities and common for different brands of equipment. I was able to find a local ac contractor who was willing to help me before startup to add some refrigerant and to fix a couple of connection leaks between the line sets and the indoor units. I've got to say it was not so easy to find someone to do this step as most of the larger ac contractors don't want to help unless they do the full installation. But in the end it was a necessity to have the expert help. Also, at least with the Mitsubishi line, you better make sure you do things right because unless you use the high priced help for the full installation they will not warranty the equipment. But the good news is the system is working great for us and the price was $6428.89 plus my labor.
