Jumping through unnecessary hoops
I'm moving to a new apartment soon. The property manager suggested I have my cats registered as ESAs to negate the hefty pet deposit and pet rent they would otherwise require. I honestly do suffer from anxiety and depression and get a lot of support from my cats, so that seemed dandy to me. I found Pettable, answered all the questions and booked a phone call with Rochelle Smith. Easy. She asked me about my symptoms, asked me about how Cat A provided relief, and I told her. Then she asked how Cat B provided relief. I told her they both comforted me in the same way. She told me that wasn't justification for prescribing two emotional support animals. Huh. I rattled off numerous suggestions for how Cat B might provide me unique support in a way Cat A doesn't. Every time, she flatly told me "That isn't justification, one cat can do that." For instance, I suggested that because I rescued Cat B off the street, she gave me a sense of purpose. She countered "Doesn't Cat A also give you purpose?" It was so frustrating. I began shaking. She just kept telling me things like “A blind person can’t be prescribed two seeing eye dogs.” I’d say “But not having one of my cats would break my heart” and she’d say “That’s not justification” and I’d sigh and it seemed to go on forever. It felt like a test. She didn't give me any sort of guidance as to what she was looking for beyond needing justification for why each cat was uniquely necessary for my emotional well-being. Her tone was consistently bored and unfeeling, as if I was inconveniencing her. Eventually, I figured out the magic words: I said Cat A lets me walk her on a leash, so she gets me outdoors for fresh air and exercise; and Cat B is very particular about bedtime so she keeps me on a regular sleep schedule. She said that was fine and quickly wrapped up the call. I was seething afterwards. I felt like a needed a therapist to recover from the therapist. I told myself it was mostly irrational frustration I was feeling, as the therapist probably needed to check certain boxes to make it work legally. But then I looked it up. Per Pettable.com, “The ADA also states that your emotional support animal does not need to support you in a different manner than your other emotional support animal. Specifically, if both your dogs help you with depression, then the ADA recognizes that both may play a crucial role in supporting you in your depressive symptoms.” Therefore, I hate that therapist for making me suffer through a stressful phone call for no reason. Plus the letter she wrote for me had a spelling error.
