CITI-Customer Service is Foreign
Scathing Review: Citi Credit Cards Customer Service – An Exercise in Frustration and Incompetence
If you're considering a Citi credit card or already stuck with one, do yourself a favor and run the other way. Citi's customer service isn't just bad—it's a masterclass in how to alienate and exhaust loyal customers until they give up in defeat. I recently had the misfortune of needing assistance, and what should have been a straightforward call turned into a 1.5-hour nightmare of incompetence, language barriers, and endless loops that left me angrier and more helpless than when I started.
From the moment you dial in, you're funneled into a system designed to waste your time. Expect to be bounced around in endless transfer loops, where each "representative" seems more clueless than the last. And here's the kicker: Citi relies heavily on offshore call centers in India, where the agents can neither understand basic English nor speak it in a way that's remotely comprehensible. Heavy accents, mumbled speech, and a complete lack of familiarity with your account details make every interaction feel like shouting into the void.
I tried three separate times, each call devolving into the same farce. I'd explain my issue clearly and slowly, only to be met with confusion, irrelevant questions, or promises to "transfer you to the right department"—which inevitably led to another agent with an even thicker accent who forced me to start the entire painful process over again. After 90 minutes of this torture, I finally hung up, defeated and no closer to resolution. This isn't service; it's customer abandonment by design.
Countless others have experienced the same nightmare. Trustpilot and similar review sites are flooded with identical complaints: impossible-to-understand reps, endless holds and transfers, unresolved issues, and a shocking disregard for the people who actually fund their operations. One-star ratings dominate for a reason—Citi has earned its reputation as having some of the worst customer service in the banking industry.
Citi, if you're reading this (and we all know your executives probably aren't), outsourcing to undertrained, hard-to-understand call centers halfway around the world while charging premium fees for your cards is a disgrace. Your customers deserve better than linguistic gymnastics and bureaucratic runarounds. Fix it—hire competent, English-proficient staff who can actually solve problems—or watch your cardholders flee to competitors who value their time and business.
Avoid Citi credit cards at all costs. The rewards aren't worth the headache.

Citi Bank, the Costco credit card, holds me responsible for a fraudulent charge of $4300
Citi Bank is the Costco credit card. I had a fraudulent charge on my credit card from a hotel in Taiwan for 4 nights for $4000. I disputed this charge. However, Citi Bank refused to honor my dispute and is holding me accountable for the full amount.
Citi Bank said that I gave my credit card information to the hotel, so that it is my fault. Why is Citi Bank blaming me, when it was the hotel that produced the fraudulent charge?
I would not trust Citi Bank to have your back when it comes to fradulent charges whether domestic or international. I have documentation for all of this.

Citi believes that it's the customer
Recently opened a Costco Anywhere credit card account (Citi). Attempted to create a joint account with my spouse during the online application process. The app was not allowing me, but I did receive a message that I would be able to add her later. No big deal. I received the card in the mail and then activated it. The process was simple. Creating a mobile Citi account was a pain in the buttock. I eventually gained access by contacting customer service. I added my spouse as an authorized user. She received the card and activated it. She tried to create an online account and a nightmare again. Used chat for assistance. My wife went through the entire verification process with Rex during a chat. Rex reports that my wife was removed as an authorized user? I was sitting next to her during the chat. She explained that she just activated the card today. Rex reported that a new card was mailed out today. She asked if the card activated today should be destroyed, as we are confused why a new card was sent out today when we just activated the card we just received. Rex immediately terminated the chat without notification. We just closed our Citi account. This many issues with a new account with poor customer service is a red flag.

Due to Barclays takeover and all the glitches, I was unable to sign on to make my payment when due. I was 3 days late with it and they charged me $39.90 interest. Online chat could not help and I am unable to call as am abroad.
It wasn't my choice to loose my Barclays account. I shall leave citi nearer my fee time as I'm not paying them $99 a year for this service.

No customer service.
This company doesnt have bad customer service, they have NO customer service. It is impossible to get through to a person. They made a mistake on an application of mine and I've been trying to fix it, but I may be blessed that my account isn't going through based on all the other bad reviews. Don't even bother applying.

Very disappointed with CitiBank after the transition from Barclays. I’ve been unable to create my online account, since I lost my card a representative told me that I need it to wait for my new card to be able to create an account. It’s taking 4–6 weeks for the replacement card to arrive. This has made it impossible to access or manage my account during the transition. Due to that situation I missed a payment that will be reported to my credit report. Yes, they will send a letter explaining why, but the why don’t matter to me. The process has been frustrating, Customers should not lose access to their accounts for over a month because of delays in mailing a card. There most be other way, like using SS #. Much better communication and faster service are needed.
