Myzone takes too long to kick in and it’s very frustrating when I’m trying to track my progress.

Hi, Jo,
We completely understand that a delay would feel frustrating when you are trying to just get to earning your MEPs. To speed up connection, we recommend getting the sensors on the back of the strap damp. Some people also find better connection with the belt rotated so the module sits slightly left-of-center. If you have tried these things and are still having trouble, please do let our support team know by tapping Help on the app menu and selecting the support option.

Many times the MYZONE will not work…
Many times the MYZONE will not work properly. For example it’ll start you out in a blue zone and then flip to a red zone back to a blue zone back to red zone before it stabilizes and is actually picking up the true heart rate and putting in the right zone.

The new myzone is isn’t great
The new myzone is not very good at all.. it doesn’t accurately monitor heart rate and falls out if it’s cradle.
I am going back to using the old one as it’s far more accurate and I’m not losing the data

Fantastic…until something…
:-update. Issue resolved.
Fantastic piece of kit until something goes wrong. Customer service is slow at best and terrible at worst.
Use a Bot-system which is ***p and the ticket system to live agents seems to never work
+48 hours after posting above. This is typical. Got a reply to this negative review after a few hours whilst still not heard about my query re my issue with my myzone, even a few days later. Obviously more concerned about negative reviews potentially affecting new customers than they are about current clients. Back to Garmin for me I think.

The MyZone Switch
I’m a great fan of MyZone. It is a very good way of measuring your output across all forms of exercise. MyZone provides a comprehensible measure showing just how hard you’re working and both feeds back instantaneously and records it for future analysis.
The one limitation with the MZ3 was that you couldn’t wear it whilst swimming (you could but there wasn’t much point because the MZ3 had problems connecting underwater). MyZone has rectified this with the Switch and it will work anywhere!
The first thing I noticed was just how small and light it is – less than half the size of the MZ3. This is both a blessing and a curse – if you’re wearing it on a chest strap and have to lie on your front you don’t feel it digging in as much but it is far easier to lose!
But this is the big thing – you don’t HAVE to wear it on a chest strap. You can also wear it either at the wrist or on the arm. When it’s on a chest strap both the Switch and the MZ3 use the electrical signals from your heart to measure your heart rate. This is very accurate (although see my test results).
When you’re using the Switch on either the wrist or arm it becomes active much more quickly when you turn it on than the MZ3 does when it’s on its strap. When you’re wearing the Switch on the chest it takes a similar length of time to activate as the MZ3.
When you wear it on either the wrist or the arm the Switch uses PPG (photoplethysmogram) to give the reading. This is not as accurate as when worn on the chest. To see how big the difference between the Switch and the MZ3 is I did various exercises wearing an MZ3 and a Switch both on my arm and on my chest. (I haven’t been swimming so haven’t tested the wrist mount at all).
For my first test, I did some weight training and followed it with a stretch session. I wore the Switch mounted on my arm. Both the MZ3 and the Switch show an exercise duration of 1 hour and 17 minutes however the MZ3 shows that I earned 169 MEPs and the Switch only 150. That’s roughly 10% less when I’m using the Switch.
I then took two short cycle rides. Again I had the Switch on my arm. This time it reported 19 MEPs one way (downhill) and 34 MEPs coming back. The MZ3 reported 22 and 42 MEPs respectively. About 7% difference.
For a third test, I took some spin classes and finished with another stretch session. I wore both the MZ3 and the Switch mounted on my chest. These sessions lasted 75 minutes. The MZ3 reported 177 MEPs but the Switch only 165. On three separate occasions in this session, the Switch showed me with a zero heart rate which I suspect accounts for the difference.
For the last test, I did another weight and stretch session with both my MZ3 and Switch worn on the chest again. I tightened the chest strap for the Switch. I completed 70 minutes exercise with the Switch showing 127 MEPs and the MZ3 142. Again the Switch is lower by about 10%. I noticed one point where my heart rate was shown as 36% for a few seconds. I don’t feel that was long enough to account fully for the difference.
I’ve had a problem recently with the MZ3 which I believe is caused by the strap. This is still under investigation but changing to the Switch doesn’t seem to have resolved the issue with the chest mounted device.
The switch has however has solved my problem because I don’t have to wear it on my chest. Neither the arm nor the wrist mount requires the electrical contacts – the things that I believe are causing the problem.
The Switch has three major advantages over the MZ3. The first, and by far the biggest, it that it doesn’t rely on straps with electrical contacts; it has a much bigger memory than the MZ3 – 32 hours rather than the 16 hours of the MZ3 and it is also capable of syncing to two Bluetooth devices at once although if you have something that has an ANT+ connection (like a Peloton) this isn’t much use.
Knowing that the Switch is less accurate than the MZ3 I would still go for the Switch over the MZ3 if I were buying one for the first time. I like new tech and I can’t see any reason for buying the much older model. If I wanted to use a MyZone whilst swimming or did not want to have to use the chest strap AND was willing to put up with a much lower reading then I would upgrade. However, the only reason for most MZ3 users to upgrade is that it’s a shiny new bit of tech then its disadvantages outweigh its advantages meaning that upgrading is not worth the money.

Hi, Malcolm,
Thank you for being such a loyal member of our community--we appreciate you and the time you've taken to review and compare the products!
To echo your analysis, PPG is expected to be about 5% different from EKG readings as it is an estimate based upon the pulse it sees as you workout. It is not recommended for weight lifting or non-rhythmic motions, as these factors make it more difficult to accurately predict. That said, the chest readings should be the same as the MZ3 since it uses exactly the same technology. If you find that those vary significantly, then we would consider it eligible for warranty replacement. Please do let us know if you would like to do that!
The main goal of the Switch was to be more inclusive, opening up to those who primarily swim or who were opposed to wearing a chest strap. We hope we've been able to achieve that and always welcome input from our customers! Thank you again for sharing your experience, and please always do feel welcome to reach out.
In good health,
The Myzone Team
