I've been a happy customer for years. But no more. I just had to cancel my plan because I found out Petplan is quadrupling its rates. That's cost prohibitive for me and I'm sure many other people. Here's what they had to say about the rate increases:
"Since our previous underwriter decided to leave the pet insurance industry we did have to locate a new underwriter which would maintain our high level of coverage. We did have to readjust our rates with the new underwriter as we found we were undercharging for the plans in the past."

Unethical practices, all smoke and mirrors.
UNETHICAL PRACTICES, DO NOT PURCHASE A PETPLAN POLICY!
I purchased a Petplan insurance policy in February 2016 at the cost of $86.05 per month. I haven't needed to use it until August 2016 which means they have already collected $688.40 of my money for a policy that they haven't paid out a dime on.
My dog has an unidentified lump on her wrist which was noted by the vet prior to purchasing the Petplan policy. What this means is that the veterinarian noted in the patient log to have existed(one line), but it was never tested on or diagnosed to be a condition. Despite it having gone undiagnosed Petplan chose to deny a pre-authorization to have the lump tested and removed. The reason for the denial was that it is considered a pre-existing condition simply because she was showing symptoms prior to purchasing the policy.
I spoke with a representative on the phone who explained a pre-existing condition to be “any condition that exists prior to purchasing the plan EXCEPT conditions in which the breed is genetically prone to getting(hereditary). For example, if a Daschund gets arthritis in its back they will cover the cost of treatment because the breed is prone to back arthritis.” Upon explaining this to me I inquired about whether or not they would cover my English Bulldogs hip dysplasia because, as a breed, they are genetically prone to getting the condition and are known to have the highest rate of hip dysplasia among any breed. She told me that despite it being a hereditary condition, it would not be covered because it is a pre-existing condition.
In addition to the lump on her wrist I submitted an official claim in the amount of $325(or $800) regarding a condition that my dog was in fact treated for. My Petplan policy comes with a $200 deductible PER CONDITION. Instead of paying the difference($325 - $200 = $125) they separated the claim into 2 different conditions involving allergies thus 2x $200 deductibles, neither of which were met therefor they did not pay a dime. I called them to point out numerous errors that were made across BOTH of the new claims where the amount applied to the deductible was less than it should have been. There was also the issue that without the Banfield wellness plan that I’m paying an additional $40/mo for, the visit would have costed nearly $800. The difference in cost is very clearly stated on the vet invoice that was submitted with the claim. In other words, I’m paying Banfield for a discount that Petplan is knowingly taking advantage of and then taking MORE of my money to do so.
Upon requesting that they cancel my policy and refund me for the full amount that I have already paid them they refused to do so stating that I had been using their service and that I chose to have the Banfield wellness plan in addition to the Petplan. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t make it ok for them to knowingly take advantage of people. Smoke and mirrors and knowingly stealing from me, extremely unethical.

Couldn't live with out it
My pet from a pup to an adult has had many trips to the vet. Some required expensive surgeries. Fortunately, I had pet plan who kept paying and paying. we love petplan and encourage all owners to have it! It's truly life saving.

Happiness Manager does a Great Job
I had the pleasure of talking to Kim, Happiness Manager, a couple days ago on how to sort out a policy transfer. Kim was knowledgeable, clearly describing how the process worked, while at the same time, she was funny and kind. The folks at PetPlan make it easy with their mobile platform that has allowed me to file claims really easily, but the real measure of customer service comes when you need to speak with someone, and that someone is very good at what they do. I could not be happier with PetPlan and the excellent staff the employ. Kim, thank you again for your help!

AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE!
WOW!
I must start by mentioning the name of the representative who took the time to take on my claims. Leah Leslie is her name and anyone whom lands a phone call with her is one unknowingly, lucky person.
On the past weekend myself and my partner noticed out 10 month old puppy not using his hind left leg, which we grew gravely concerned about. He's a rescue and quite rambunctious if I do say so myself, so we registered for insurance just last week. What timing!
However when we brought him to the emergency on Monday I was devastated to hear that we needed surgery immediately. Being a first time dog owner who lives downtown Toronto, I did not anticipate that I would need such a large amount of money at my dispose so soon, my mistake.
I had called PetPlan in a panic and grew concerned as I began to receive estimates as per his surgery. I left the call in a fuss but a few moments later my phone rang and it was Leah.
From that moment on she took charge of the situation, upgraded the policy as we were able to, got all the documents required to me in no time, and then even went on to personally handle the pre-approval for his surgery; which was expedited so quickly that just 5 days later, he is already in his procedure.
I cannot begin to explain how big of a leader Leah is and how much stress she was able to dilute the situation of. Her service and speed is impeccable and I do hope to be privileged in having her service my family again.
I recommend PetPlan to any individual who cares deeply about their fur baby, but who also cares about the quality of service they receive.
Thank you Leah, and thank you PetPlan!

HIDDEN CLAUSES - they look hard for ways NOT to pay on customer claims
PET PLAN was recommended to me by a neighbor. It sounded SO good that I quickly chose the $100 a month policy. I received no warning about any fine print or exceptions when I called, but they happily took my credit card and started billing me and sending me their newsletter.
When five months later, my dog had knee problems, I called to see if the therapy and acupuncture I chose as a care plan would be covered, they said INDEED. So as required, I sent in the bills for vet and surgeon exams and therapy. After $2,000 in bills had been accumulated and we found out that surgery was probably the best option - PET PLAN wrote and said "Sorry but our policies don't cover knee issues for the first SIX MONTHS.' When I explained how upset I was, they said I could get a letter from my vet saying there were no knee problems when I signed up FIVE MONTHS before. Our family vet was happy to do that, since it was absolutely true. We sent the letter in, waiting for a positive response.
FORGET IT - they took a month for their "Board of Vets' to review - translation: dig for an excuse NOT to pay. They read the specialists notes that said "bilateral tear vs chronic" and wrote to me and said -- SEE it's a CHRONIC so it was preexisting. We won't pay."
I called the specialist surgeon that my vet sent me to and she said "I put tear vs chronic - we weren't saying which, could be either - they should pay at least half!
So now that I've paid $1,100 for PET PLAN and $2,000 out of my pocket and the surgery my sweet boxer needs is $7,000 - PET PLAN can offer me NOTHING? They wrote the second letter saying "We are not without compassion in this case." REALLY??? What a cheap lie. They are in business to find their way OUT of paying their clients. Why else wouldn't they encourage their new clients to get a "thirty day knee health certificate" when they sign up?
Disgusting!!! THEY NEED TO MAKE IT RIGHT.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS COMAPNY
