Buyer beware - Do not purchase Godiva gift cards
I received a Godiva Gift card for Christmas that was purchased at a local grocery store. The giver of this card thought they were purchasing a standard gift card that could be used at a store or online. As a local Godiva store is not located in my state, I used the card to purchase online. My gift card number would not work. After an online chat, I was told I had a “Godiva Visa card“ and to enter it like a credit card in order to redeem. Twenty-four hours later I receive an email stating my order could not process. I phoned Godiva only to be told this card CANNOT BE USED ONLINE. This card can ONLY be used at local Godiva boutique stores. As the closest store is 4 hours from my home (no it cannot be used in other stores that sell Godiva chocolates) I have no way to redeem this card. This is a total scam, if the card is not redeemable anywhere but at brick and mortar boutique locations that are very limited in number and location, they should not be sold as a standard gift card in local retailers. Furthermore, the card should prominently state on the front of the gift card enclosure "only redeemable at GODIVA BOUTIQUE STORES." It only makes sense a company gift card should be redeemable both in person and online directly from the stated company. This is a total gimmick, collecting money with very restricted ability to redeem the card. When a complaint was made to Godiva with Kathy the "supervisor of the complaint department." I requested my complaint to be sent up to the top that this is false and misleading to customers who purchase this gift card believing they are purchasing a gift card that can be easily redeemed with the Godiva retailer either in person or online. Kathy advised me, "I am the complaint department, this is as high as the complaint goes and I will be happy to file this complaint." I advised her I would be submitting this as a poor company review online. I have always loved Godiva chocolate and purchase them for myself as well as for gifts, I will no longer support this company with my money. Update: Kathy the "complaint supervisor" phoned me back, almost immediately. She made an offer that "I send my gift card to her office/private suite number", and she will process my order and then cash out the card with Metabank (the Visa company). If my card is not received she will charge my account. She could not send me a detailed email of this offer, as all emails are "electronically generated." She stated she (even as a supervisor) could not send me an email with this offer from her official Godiva email as she is working remotely from home (?). Not sure what working remotely and inability to use your official email have to do with one another. She could however, alter the "electronically generated" email to include her private suite number and her private phone number, but not the offer as noted above. I am still pending this email with confirmation that my new order is being process and with the necessary information to send her the gift card. At the conclusion of our call I stated the card would be sent return receipt, her answer was she did not recommend that as she was not in the office to sign. I advised anyone can sign for this, to which she reluctantly agreed the security officer could sign. I would like to believe she is genuine, however, I feel as if this is likely a scam, offered by a supervisors of Godiva. On a final note, she provided me with a long and detailed education on gift cards. Essentially recommending I advise the gift giver not to purchase any gift card in the future and that I consider not purchasing them myself. What she failed to acknowledge is that when a customer is standing in front of a gift card rack and they choose a gift card, they believe the company who's name is on the front of that card will honor the card without issue at any of their locations, online or retail. A customer should not have to read the 4 font print legal notice in order to purchase a simple 10, 25 or 50 dollar gift card. Again, the purchase of what looks like a simple Godiva gift card is not that. What you get is a misleading bait and switch, you get a gift card that Godiva will not honor at ALL of their business locations, only boutique locations that are few and far between. A limited card such as this should only be sold at those locations where it may be redeemed and clear customer notification should be provided regarding the limitations of this gift card.
