Duke Energy: Show Us How $70 Became $700
We were on Duke Energy's Annual Flex program, paying approximately $70 per month. When we moved and closed the account, Duke Energy suddenly claimed we owed approximately $700. Naturally, we questioned it. We asked Duke Energy to provide documentation showing exactly how they calculated the final balance. We weren't asking for a discount, forgiveness, or special treatment. We simply wanted them to SHOW US THE MATH. Instead of providing the documentation we requested and resolving the dispute, Duke Energy ultimately sent the account to collections. Think about that. They were confident enough in the approximately $700 balance to send it to a collection agency, but apparently not willing to provide us with the documentation we requested showing how that amount was calculated. If the $700 was legitimate, show us. Provide the accounting. Explain the Annual Flex reconciliation. Give us the documentation supporting the amount. That should be an incredibly simple request for a company the size of Duke Energy. Customers are expected to pay Duke Energy accurately, completely, and on time. It seems reasonable to expect Duke Energy to demonstrate the same level of accuracy and accountability when its billing is challenged. Instead, we asked for documentation and got collections. For a company of this size, that is absolutely disgraceful. If you are a Duke Energy customer, keep EVERYTHING: bills, payment confirmations, emails, screenshots, names, dates, and every request you make for documentation. Based on our experience, you may eventually need to document Duke Energy's billing better than Duke Energy is willing to document it for you.
