Very deceptive verification process, it will cost you money. Don't do it!

Couchsurfing was the best website that had ever happened to me. Lifechanging experience, friends, hookups, travels, even 2 girlfriends, one turkish one venezuelan, helped feel like travelling through my life. Then turned into a paying fake airbnb fake collaborative economy scam. Couchsurfing is shred to pieces nowadays, asking founding members to pay to access their personal info (! Illegal in europe) and totally lost the pioneer spirit. A total waste of a great idea. Shame on the new owners. How to destroy an utopy in a few years. Total shame, you should not be able to sleep tight anymore.

It used to be a great community and now a total scam. They ask for your credit card to verify your identity and then charge you £51 without warning and refuse to refund you afterward. Don't waste your time and money.

Complete waste of time, money and effort. As a newbie on the app, nobody & I mean nobody is willing to host you. Currently pushing 60+ requests in several cities and no takers. There isn’t an option to filter out profiles that are unavailable. Majority respond with a reason / excuse & the most common are: ‘sorry I am hosting those dates’ or ‘sorry I am traveling on those dates’. There is quite clearly a major lack of trust there with the owners. I am 35, well educated & professional with a couple of dozen excellent reviews on Airb&b. Clearly not good enough. I was harassed by a member in the first couple of days. This guy wrote several paragraphs on the personal review section. The administration refused to remove the comment even though it caused great personal anxiety & upset. Just don’t waste your time on CS.

Yesterday, when verifying my account I had TWO options: monthly verification of 15 Danish Kroner or an annual verification of 105 Danish kroner. I chose annual verification. Then I got an email with a receipt of 105 Danish kroner and thought everything was fine. Minutes later I got a new email with a new receipt of a lifetime verification with an amount paid of 420 Danish kroner. I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR A LIFETIME VERIFICATION nor did I get the option to choose lifetime verification. I registered my credit card ONLY to pay for an annual verification NOT a lifetime verification. I wrote to the couchsurfing support team to sort things out. However, I just received an email from them stating that refunds are not available for verification purchases after may 14th 2020. They also state that I was charged extra because I chose lifetime verification. But I DID NOT. To double check this I tried to register a new account with a new email to see the verification options once again. And just like the first time I got two options: Monthly verification and annual verification. NOT LIFETIME VERIFICATION. I have documented the steps of verification on my mobil phone. Total scam. Really disappointed!!

Just got a newsletter from this company how they provide "help" for the people from Ukraine: "Couchsurfing is no longer requiring contributions from our members located in Ukraine". But people in Europe who wanna give them accommodation of course have to pay. I can imagine that a lot of people who haven't used that website before will create a new profile now to give the war victims a warm and safe place to stay for a while. Congratulations couchsurfing for finding a new target group for you to make money with: people who wanna help war victims. Distasteful behavior!
