Couchsurfing was great in the past but nowadays its just a moneymachine. They say its because of covid but clearly its bs. Now you have to pay monthly even to host, which is just ludicrous. I would understand for the travelers, but for a host? come on. If you want to verify yourself they sneakily charge you 620SEK for a lifetime membership. Here's the thing, it never says "Pay", but only "Verify with card". You can bet I will file lawsuit on this website/company

I would recommend it like 5 or 6 years ago. Nowadays it's just a scam with hidden fees.

Seriously guys! Are you guys morons or what? Why are you giving your credit card (or other banking details) to a company that has hijacked accounts and put them behind scam-ware? Wake up! Read all the reviews during the last 2 years. My account was put behind the very same paywall scam where they demanded my credit card details in order to login. I requested deletion of my account and no longer use Couchsurfing. It is practically dead in the water these days.

Wish I could give zero stars. They scammed me for a $60 "lifetime verification" fee when I used their app the first time. I did agree to a $1.99 monthly contribution. But NEVER agreed to an an entirely separate and additional $60 charge for ANYTHING. I never saw anything asking me to agree or authorize any $60 charge at all. But somehow they are telling me I signed up for this "lifetime verification" nonsense. All I did was agree to a $1.99 and then tried to verify my phone number. And somehow they said thst led to this $60 charge. The customer service was completely unhelpful and basically said to me that they wouldn't refund the money because they use the money the get from this "lifetime verification" nomsense to keep the app up and running. So, not only are they unhelpful but it is clear they they are OK with scamming people like that just to keep the business afloat. Pretty despicable. Just a real trashy app with a horrible customer service team.

I am giving a 1 star because of my recent experiences with couch surfing. I had some really nice experiences with the site before they started to charge people to use it. I would not be against a small fee which I have been paying for years despite not really using it as I believed it was still a great platform. Charging £51 to be verified on top of a monthly fee though is a bit ridiculous and also the fact that most hosts are not at all active on their platform, which makes it almost impossible to find one. Most hosts profiles show that they haven't been active for years still they appear as accepting guests and the system has no way to filter this. All together they started to charge money and the platform became totally dead, they don't seem to be trying to improve.
