Pro's and Cons
I was expecting this product to extend the shelf life of everything from lettuce to meat. Does my Chef's Preserve live up to all of demonstrations I saw on line? No. However, the product does has saved me a considerable amount of money on specific food items. Here are the specific food items that and pro's and con's that I have experienced: Pro's: 1.) The small size and ease of use is a big plus. the USB charging system works great 2.) Food items that i have found chefs preserve works very well include: A. All kinds of cheese, but especially hard cheese. I love quality parmesan that I can grate as needed. being able to open the bag, grate what I need, close the bag and vacuum re-seal quickly is a huge benefit and my favorite thing about the device. I have used the same bag over and over! B. Processed meat, such as cold cuts, bacon and sausage. Especially lunch meat, I've had turkey and ham remain fresh and for 3 weeks. C. Nuts and sturdy snack such as pretzels, harder Cookies and Crackers. B. Brown sugar and flour. I do use either very much. I emptied my brown sugar into a small bag and was pleasantly surprised to find it soft and ready to use 5 months later. The same applies to flour and sugar. The only down side is that the product has been removed from the store packaging first. C. Pork Chops. Chicken. Buy both fresh, vacuum seal then freeze. D. Frozen vegetables . Chefs preserve extends reduces freezer burn and helps to break big bags(cheaper) into serving size Here are my Con's: 1.) My biggest con: I do not think the bags should be marketed as "Dishwasher safe" They begin to break down after one use and the seal is never the same. This point relates to re-using the same bag multiple time for item like hard cheese and nuts. I have found that gently washing the bags with regular dish soap and hot water works better. The trick is to allow air to circulate into the bag while it dries. the the dishwasher, the moist heat dry cycle does not work well with the bags 2.) Food items that do not work well: A. Beef: Freezing fresh meat and then thawing makes a yucky mess. Don't do it. Ok to vacuum seal to extend shelf life for about a week. B. Any type of delicate e green fresh vegetables. Side by side, salad greens did not stay fresher in the vacuum sealed bags. I found the same to be true for broccoli, green beans and Brussel sprouts. Asparagus turned mushy very quickly. C. Slightly better luck with harder vegetables such as peppers D. The replacement bags, in my opinion are a bit pricy. I used all of the bags that are included in the first purchase, I am not sure if I will be purchasing more in the future, E. I also need to mention that I have not tried the glass containers. I would like the option of purchasing 1 container. Buying the set of 3 for $50 when I already have quite a few Hard plastic and glass containers that work fine when I need them does not make sense. I'm trying to reduce - not add containers. Summary: Overall,
