An Honest Review
As someone who is new to telehealth, I approached Cerebral with a healthy dose of skepticism. Could a national telehealth company with (presumably) thousands upon thousands of patients really give individuals the care they need? Yes and no. It depends what you’re looking for. Since the pandemic, more and more people have turned to telehealth to get the services they need. Convenience is key, and platforms like Cerebral can get the mental health evaluation and medication you need. On the other hand, you can expect quite a few disruptions on your way there. Don’t expect your care team to respond to your inquiries right away, but they WILL respond eventually. So it’s a mixed bag. Do expect cancellations (my counselor cancelled 8 hours before my visit) and do expect lots of different people with different roles to intervene on your behalf when cancellations, rescheduling, prescriber problems, etc. happen. Sometimes it can feel like you’re a hot potato and just getting passed around by a series of people (again, not ones on your original care team). This is when the Cerebral platform is most maddening. You can almost see this vast, amorphous entity that is Cerebral turning its gears to move itself forward. Sometimes it can be very frustrating to engage with your care team and it feels like yelling into an echo chamber. The sluggishness in response times is not your care team’s fault. Oftentimes, I think Cerebral as a platform is taking on too many patients, with not enough counselors and providers to have the platform function properly. The turnover rate must be incredibly high, including new patients, counselors, and providers. Don’t be surprised if your care team changes. I imagine employees at Cerebral are under an incredible amount of pressure to meet quotas, to expand its customer base, and to deliver the analytics upper management wants for investors, shareholders, etc. The reason for five stars? We’ll, mostly to balance out the one-star reviews (if my experience of two months so far is a typical indication of the service, then a one-star review seems disingenuous, which I feel many reviewers might give out of frustration instead of giving the platform a chance). Yes, the platform does work. Yes, you will get the counseling and the medication you need. Yes, your questions will be answered—eventually. If you’re serious about your mental health and think a company like Cerebral might be a good fit with your lifestyle, then give it a chance. But really give it a chance. Don’t sign up, cancel after 30 minutes or 3 days or after one month, and say that you got ripped off, cheated, swindled, etc. Cerebral has its own internal logic I’m starting to understand little by little, and though its process to get you the help you need might be cumbersome and labyrinthine, in the end it does work. Whether you want it to work or not with regard to your mental health is entirely a personal matter.
