I’m going to leave an honest review…
I'm going to leave an honest review here… I have used the Betterhelp platform for some time on and off. My most recent in-state therapist on the platform just decided to leave. Deciding what to do with my account has been stressful. I finally contacted platform staff and had an okay experience with that aspect. I wish platform support was 24/7 so matching was more user-friendly. I came across my recent in-state therapist's profile after taking a break from the platform. My guess is she was recruited during my time off. I'm so grateful to have met and worked with Betty Hanna. She is good at what she does. I grew a lot in the two months we worked together. My life will never be the same. My experience with this platform is really hit or miss. The way the system is structured is convenient for the most part and easy to use. Finding the right therapist for individual specific needs is challenging. From my experiences on the platform, profiles tend to be somewhat misleading. The platform tends to be largely writing based and so I adapted my style to fit that initially because I could when I signed up the first time in 2016 which worked up until I had to leave my first therapist on the platform and life changed for me. My subsequent experiences have been mostly unsatisfying. I’ve had experiences where I let a therapist know I prefer to write since my life has become even more full. However, I quickly realized that particular therapist felt uncomfortable with writing. I’ve had other experiences where the therapist pressured me to have a live session. Then there was the time where the therapist treated me insensitively after I disclose some challenges I am facing after that experience I left that therapist very quickly. I actually most enjoy using the platform in a hybrid fashion if the therapist has a schedule that works with mine and we have a strong therapeutic connection. The platform has since added audio and video communications. It is frustrating to use the service when you have requested somebody within the directory only to find that the therapist is full when you are seeking services the most. So if you’re looking to work with a specific therapist you better hope that your timing matches when they are available. The other frustrating part is not being able to see therapist’s schedules on their profile. Clients can only view said schedules if they pick the therapist via the automated system. Currently, the automated system will show you profiles of counselors not in your state… State restrictions being lifted due to covid. Of course, they will show you counselors in your state as well but if you are looking to be matched with someone specifically they may not show up automatically. I’m not sure if this is a blessing or a curse, I have worked with counselors on the platform who were not necessarily in my state long before Covid as well as during Covid. If you pick an out-of-state therapist from the automated system do your best to make sure that’s what you want because attempting to go back is a pain particularly if you live in a different state. And hope that they stay long enough. So much of the time it feels like I’m playing the lottery in terms of whether I will find a suitable therapist and hoping the timing works out for me Instead of getting the support, I’m seeking when I need it and when it’s most convenient for me in terms of starting services again. The system’s financial aid support is nice however services are still barely affordable since prices have gone up. This isn’t my first rodeo in terms of therapy, so I have a pretty solid understanding of what I’m looking for in a therapist. For me, that is best assessed through feeling and interactions. I’m taking some time off from the platform again and will see where it takes me. For now, all I can say is thank you BetterHelp for being here and allowing me to grow.
