Grief exhausted me to my core, so I finally took the step of seeking help through BetterHelp.
Over the past month, I opened up to a therapist about a significant part of my life — things that weren't easy to share.
Today marks one year since my mom passed. It's also been one of the hardest weeks I've had since losing her. Four minutes before my scheduled session, my therapist cancelled. Then she cancelled all future sessions as well. Her reason: she needed a "native English speaker."
Her profile listed English as a language she speaks. We even had a conversation at the end of our first session about whether we were a good fit — and she said we were.
Being cancelled like this, on this day, is a painful reminder that reaching out for help takes real courage — and that the motivation to keep trying, when you're already struggling, can wear down over time.
I'm not sharing this for attention or sympathy. My only hope is that someone else going through something similar might feel a little less alone.
Please do not use or recommend BetterHelp.
What happened to me likely isn't isolated. And I genuinely worry about the harm this kind of experience could cause someone in a more fragile state.

Hi Dustin,
Thank you for sharing about this experience--what you've described is certainly not the type of behavior we would expect from a therapist providing services on our platform (or in general). We want to be sure that our Clinical Operations team can look into this further and investigate any clinical quality issues based on your feedback.
I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so that we can have a member of our management team follow-up with you directly.
Thank you,

Your therapist is a crapshoot
Your therapist is a crapshoot. I used it last year worked out ok. I decided to try it again this time wanting to find a different Therapist, different circumstances, etc.. I ended up trying the first person based on her description read she was a safe space, etc. furthest thing from the truth. She was completely judgmental made me feel uncomfortable and literally like I was a five-year-old being reprimanded. I switched Therapist to another woman this time complete opposite. She said her technique was to speak of her experiences to help me through mine, which was absolutely ridiculous. She literally would not look me in the eye. It was so uncomfortable and by the end of the session I felt like I was counseling her.
I reached out to BetterHelp to complain. I wanted my money back for those two sessions and was denied. It was absolutely a complete rip off. I don’t believe these people are properly vetted. First time through, the woman I used was experienced, good, but also a bit controversial. Some of her advice was a little out there.
In any case did not get my money back felt completely ripped off I would never use them and never recommend them.
After this review was spotted by BetterHelp, they did reach out to me. I corresponded with a senior customer service person. The final conclusion was that they researched my information and did give me a complete refund. I still will stand by my original comments, that I don’t believe these people are properly vetted. The person I corresponded with did tell me that they were licensed therapists. However, the second “therapist” I spoke with admittedly said she was a retired social worker, not therapist. For me, spending over $100 per session I expect to have someone with, at the very least, therapy training/education, with experience.
At the end of the day talking to the three therapists from BetterHelp I am confident in my opinion that there is a very weak screening process for these “therapists” to be able to participate on this platform.
I still will not be using the service again and I don’t recommend based on my experience.

We are sorry to hear about your disappointment with the two therapists you tried working with! We appreciate that you reached out to our team to inform us of your dissatisfaction; we will tpyically have our Clinical Operations team investigate if a clinical quality concern is flagged.
While, as a membership service, we typically do not refund for time that has been used, our team can typically provide membership extensions to allow you more time and flexibility to try other therapists, as well as all the additional features that come as part of your membership.
In any case, I've gone ahead and requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account here through Trustpilot. If you provide us that address, we can have a member of our management team look into this case further.

This is an amazing app!!
This is an amazing app. Not only are you provided with resources and tools but great therapist/counselors that really fit to your needs. And the coolest thing about this all is it can be done from wherever you log in at. I MEAN SERIOUSLY, one of the best apps that you can have if you truly want to indulge in your overall mental health. And for the community of us with limited time, busy life/schedules, taking care ovf everyone or maybe just yourself, introverts/homebodies, any type of anxiety or even trauma, limited funds or transportation this is the HELP you need.
Even if you don't jump right in with private sessions and select a therapist there is still much more to offer.

I’m here for PTSD related to a series…
I’m here for PTSD related to a series of traumatic events that started at age 4, then age 10, then 15, then several traumatic events over the last decade. I’m 45. My therapist knows I have PTSD and knows how difficult it’s been for me to beat the opioid epidemic. After 2 back surgeries I was already on pain meds but when they forced me on OxyContin it destroyed my life. I lost everything. My wife, family, friends, home, job. Everything. I’ve climbed my way back and I’ve been hanging in there but since 2022, after my divorce and at 3 years sober, identity theft took over my life. I’ve been dealing with identity theft problems regularly for years now and it’s been the last thing on earth I need since going through so much loss. I trusted my therapist. I respected him. He just created a whole new universe of trauma for me because he decided to be a doctor or psychiatrist and judged the meds I’m on without knowing my med history, the decades of different combos and cocktails, he gave me medication recommendations that made me extremely anxious, scared, he told me I needed to get off my antidepressants and my anxiety medication and my adderall and he doesn’t know that I’ve been there done that, he doesn’t know what’s been done and what hasn’t. He failed to respect my incredibly difficult journey with psychiatry and then opioids. I fought for my life to get off all pain meds and I’m 6 years clean. But it’s not his job to tell me ANYTHING about my psychiatric meds. He can ask me questions but he’s giving his judgments and recommendations and now I’m paralyzed with fear. I started crying when I took my meds last night and this morning. I cry at least once a day but not before taking my meds. It took years and I’ve been a lab rat and guinea pig as many psychiatrists over the last 30+ years did trial and error on me. It’s been hell and it’s not his job to tell me to restart the trial and error process all over again. It’s not his job to say, “Ohhhhh that’s not good, that would definitely mess up someone’s brain” in response to me telling him what meds I’m on. He asked. I would’ve said, “I’d rather not say” if I knew he was gonna betray my trust and criticize me, make me feel worse than I already feel. I trusted him and now I’ll never do therapy again. I need therapy but that’s the last straw. I’ll never trust a therapist ever again. He is a terrific therapist and has a wonderful heart and he’s highly knowledgeable and he’s a great man. I don’t want the company to give him any consequences because then he’ll destroy me on my Yelp or get revenge. And he doesn’t deserve to be ruined because of a mistake. He forgot how hypersensitive I am and how severe my ptsd is. He usually knows better than to grill me about my meds. Pressuring me to fight for my life while I stop taking all medication. I told him the withdrawal process would be hell. He said, “I know.” Like, just be a man and do it. He forgot that the last time I went through hell stopping medication, I lost EVERYTHING. Please don’t discipline him. He’s a good man. I’m not the type to sue or take things to that level but this is one time where I’m seriously considering at least consulting with an attorney because your company is responsible for making my PTSD worse.

Hi Jeffrey,
We are truly sorry to hear about everything you've gone through. We understand how the experience you've described could have made things difficult on you and brought up some very challenging emotions, all while you were just looking for support. We would appreciate the opportunity to go through our clinical review process for these claims if you would be open to it. We always want to do what is in our power to make our platform a safe and reliable place for members to connect with mental health professionals.
In case you're open to having us look into this further, I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account. If you're able to provide this to us, we'll have a member of our management team follow-up with you directly.

Amazing therapists!!!
I tried to get in with a local therapist and there was longer than an 8 week wait. My son told me about Better Help and I am so glad he did. They are wonderful. You answer questions on the kind of therapy you are looking for and do you want a certain type of therapy or a man or a woman… within one day they matched me with Kelly and I am so grateful that they did. She is incredibly knowledgeable and offers suggestions and insight and gives homework. I am so lucky to have her because she is really helping me get my house decluttered and is there with me every step of the way. I feel so comfortable with her and I thank God for send her and Better Help my way.

Your servies are helpful but the way…
Your servies are helpful but the way you manage subscription / rates/ pauses are cleary set up to mislead people.
Would be great if you keep your language consistent - 2 sessions/month = $220 (not $55/week) and 4 sessions / month = $280
which means only $60 difference for 2 additional sessions.
Also - your "pause" membership flow is also setup unfairly. I was seeing how to pause, but there was just one click away from it (no confirm window, no, this is what you will lose today if you select "pause" now vs, when your current cycle ends..
So cleary I've paid $220 for 1 session in the monhth of may because I paused one day before my second session which then auto cancelled it.
CLEARLY for the benefit of Better Help (not for bettering the people you are in service for, the patients and the therapists that rely on their income).
You can definitely do better - I recommend you look at how any other "honest" tech company manages their subscription language and pause/cancellation messaging.
Or maybe hire a new team to manage that, since they are not doing well on an easy task! I do not trust that your platform is there to "serve customers"

We really appreciate this detailed feedback about your experience, Natalie. I'm so sorry to hear about any trouble caused by the billing language and the 'pause membership' flow! We'd love the chance to follow up with you directly to learn a bit more, and to make things right if we can.
I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so that we can have a member of our management team reach out to you directly. We hope to talk soon!
