To Anyone Considering BetterHelp: A Cautionary Note from a Former Client
I want to preface this message by saying that I have no doubt the therapists and mental health professionals working with BetterHelp are caring, qualified, and dedicated to helping people. This is not about them. However, I feel it is my responsibility to warn potential clients about the deeply unethical financial practices of the BetterHelp platform itself. I recently discovered that BetterHelp had been billing me $300+ per month for nearly three years, even though I canceled the service within days of signing up in March 2022. I received confirmation of my cancellation at that time—and a refund—but the charges resumed without my consent and continued for years without my knowledge. When I contacted them to request a full refund for these unauthorized charges, they only refunded six months and stated that this was the “maximum refund” they would offer, despite never having received services, logged in, or even having a credit card on file during much of this period. If this can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. I’m sharing this because I believe people deserve transparency when choosing where to seek support. If you are considering BetterHelp, please proceed with caution. Check your billing statements carefully and frequently. Be sure to get written confirmation of all cancellations and screen-capture your account status. If you would like to see documentation of my experience—including screenshots from my account and billing records—please feel free to contact me directly. I’m happy to share everything, so you can make an informed decision. Mental health care should never come with hidden fees, deceptive billing practices, or months (in my case, years) of silent charges. We all deserve better. Sincerely, Andrew Frishman

Hi Andrew, We do apologize for the frustration. We make an effort to make the billing process and agreement very clear from the outset: we are a membership service that allows you access to a therapist for as long as you're subscribed. Canceling the membership is easy, and it sounds like we were able to get you refunded early on, but you then resubcsribed to the service. We send ongoing emails to paying members while their memberships are active, so you should have been getting those regularly as well.
