Many things wrong with car rental
1. Downgrading the car
When picking up the car, the person at the desk tried to downgrade my car rental because there was no 7 seater. I rented a Chevrolet Traverse or similar but was offered a 5 seater. What was very irritating is that he didnt speak clearly, what gave me the impression that he wasnt being honest about it. After asking three times, he spoke up and said the car was a 5 seater. (as if I hadnt found it out eventually?)
2. Billed twice for the car
The car was rented for 24 hours. From 8:30 in New Jersey pickup to the next morning Opening time in Washington 9:00. Because the Washington department was not open until 9:00 on Monday, I was billed for a full other day. I was first in the garage at 8:55.
3. Car was not clean / smelled bad.
4. Customer service
When the car was already booked I tried to register my drivers licence beforehand to reduce waiting time at the desk. There was a persistent error on the website which disabled me from doing that. Trying to help AVIS by pointing out the error on the website, lead to a kafkaesk discussion leading nowhere.

Wow, terrible customer service! Will not do business with again
Wow, always had great success with Avis UNTIL this past trip. Had booked a car for a week that I intended to take to on a trip to personal trip to MN/SD from my home in SC. Things were fine with the car for the first 3 days, but then engine lights and messages started flickering on the dash. Things quickly got worse and the car (a Chevy Malibu) went into "limp mode", meaning it could only go at most 50 (if I had it floored with engine screaming) on the freeway. I happened to be outside Minneapolis at the time and found the nearest Avis dealership (thankfully only about 8 miles away) and limped my way there. Once I arrived, the very kind gentleman there regretfully told me he could not switch out my car and that I would need to drive another 20 miles (in a car that was limping and lurching along!) into Minneapolis to the airport. I did not dare get off the road to fill up with fuel (which was still 3/4 full) on that trip, concerned that I would not ever arrive if I did. After a slow, nearly hour-long trip, I made it to the Avis floor of the rentals at MSP airport. I waited in line for one hour and some change for 2 of the slowest (and rudest) employees I've ever seen handle the 5 people in front of me in line. When it was finally my turn, I brought the employee out to the car and explained the situation and that I needed a new car to continue my trip. After a short search, I was back on the road. In all, this was nearly a 3-hour detour, but I was thankful to have a working vehicle to continue my trip. This vehicle got me home and I thought all was well, until I got the bill. It included a $58(!) gas charge for not properly filling the tank of the car I dropped off in Minneapolis. As I had explained this to the employee there, I had hoped this would have been handled appropriately, but alas, they had charged me $10/gal for the nearly 6 gallons the tank was short. I immediately called Avis and spoke to a nice customer service person name Nico, who apologized for my bad experience and the additional charge and promised to credit my card for the fuel surcharge. I thanked him, and again thought all was well. EXCEPT over the next month I never received the $58 credit to my card he had promised. Finally, I called Avis back again and spoke to a very unhelpful employee named Nakita, who after looking up my file and hearing what had happened informed me that it was "company policy" to not refund fuel surcharges. She would not let me speak to a superior and had no interest in anything except not refunding my $58 and getting me off the phone. I informed her that Avis would not be getting my business in the future (I do usually rent 2-3 times a year) and I would be leaving them a poor review and taking my business elsewhere. A very sad ending to my experience with Avis that had gone so well up to this point and over something that was their fault (a faulty car--which I understand happens). A total lack of any understanding and interest in resolving a situation that could have easily been (for $58!) resolved. Will not do business with again.

Scam charges added to your credit card.
As with everyone else’s experience on here we too experienced additional charges to our credit card one we returned home. We collected our car in LAX and dropped off at Las Vegas and were charged for ‘enhanced roadside assistance’ at $8.99 a day. I had no knowledge of this, if offered at the desk I would’ve politely declined it. They don’t apply the charge until 24 hours after you have returned the vehicle too which would suggest their scam model is that you fly home and then discover the charge and not challenge it during the hire period or while you’re in country and able to argue this more easily. I have logged a complaint with both Avis and Booking.com but am not holding my breath. Check the hire agreement when you sign it as they get you at that moment when you just want to get on your way so you don’t take much notice. Absolute scum behaviour.

paid for an upgrade showed up at the…
paid for an upgrade showed up at the location to pick up the car. There was about five cars in the whole parking lot. All were filthy dirty inside and out. I took the only vehicle that was available. Drove it all the way home there was no trunk this was supposed to be a vehicle for seven people had to exchange it at another location. They told me I was downgraded, even though I paid for an upgrade. when I was getting the rental, I let them know that I had a coupon for two extra days and I would not be back on the day that I originally booked for they told me they could see the two free days on my account I filled my car up, took it back. I just got an extra bill for over $300 including a gas charge. I’ve called several times. I asked to talk to the billing department sit on hold for 45 minutes this time and the guy told me I need to go to the citations department never heard of a citation department of a car place. He transferred me after 45 minutes and they’re closed. I am at my wits end so upset

Terrible experience
I had a terrible experience. I bought a rental package with a online operator (Booking), when I arrived at AVIS in Los Angeles, they charged me a lot for services and insurance that I hadn't requested. The same thing happened to a couple behind me. After we complained, they removed the insurances from the contract. But when I got home, surprise! They charged me for a category change of the vehicle that I hadn't requested! The contract is impossible to understand — it's impossible to know how much you are paying and how much is a deposit!

Cars great, service sucks
While trying to book two cars through Budget, I was transferred to AVIS. As I was dealing with an AVIS agent and trying to get information, I was twice hung up on. Very frustrating. At the airport, one agent was on duty while the line grew, as that agent had just come to join another, but the other took off just when the line, resulting in long waits for customers. The gal at the desk was friendly and fine, but she was the only bright spot in a dismal experience. The vehicles were great and served our needs.

Booket bil gennem rejseselskab

Poor Customer Service / Avis Rapid City, SD Airport
We recently rented from Avis in Rapid City, SD. Shortly after driving the car, we noticed a rattle in the left rear tire. After driving the car for 3 days, the "rattle" was getting worse. While on vacation, we returned to RAP to exchange the car.
Jesse Sorensen, City Manager, assisted with the exchange. During the process, we requested consideration for having to return the car and the inconvenience created by this interrupting our vacation / causing us to lose a day. Jesse stated "we didn't ask you to give up a day of your vacation". He also insinuated that he could not know if had somehow caused the problem.
We felt we were doing the right thing by returning the car as the noise was getting worse. We didn't want to damage their investment, nor did we want to be stranded in later travels.
The replacement car given was not equivalent to our original car and no consideration was provided to us.
After being accused of damaging the car and being chastised for returning it by Jesse, we have vowed to NEVER rent from Avis again.
