Best timeshare in industry but still a timeshare
Being a regular/standard owner of Trendwest we've actually thought about selling WM by Wyndham to join another Timeshare but glad we didn't (we've already invested too much here). However our experience as a Platinum Elite member was night & day (Motel 6 customer services versus Four Seasons). 1) If you are standard owner - you get NO customer service! Shame on Wyndham. No additional benefits, just the rooms. Pay more for Travelshare but it cannot be purchased on resell market or sold - it includes RCI forever, extended bonus time and use of affiliate hotels. This will give you more options and flexibility but it will cost both upfront and annually for these benefits. 2) If you purchased via 2nd party (online pennies to the dollar, not from developers) you are restricted only within WM system. Best you go thru website to reserve rooms or expect to wait 30min plus on reservation calls as you cannot get upgraded status unless you pay more to get into their system. Also OVATION and the disastrous Pathways (scam to get you to buy MORE when you're trying to exit) is simply forfeit your points so you no longer on hook for maintenance fees or resell which will give you 35-45 cents per credit (after adjustment it's more like 26 cents per credit) - that's ALL they offer. Retail from developers is $3.35 of course they'll give you discount off that but it's still $2-$3 credit. Also no tax breaks as 1098 can only be issued by developers financing arm. 3) We've never been late on our maintenance fees but I am horrified to hear these stories. I wonder what level of owners they are and whether or not they purchased directly from developers - did more research, doesn't matter they WILL put you to collections if PAST 60 days late REGARDLESS of your history! They say they will contact you per your info on file, but it's your responsibility to keep it updated. Interest and late charges start 10 days after due date. No 1st time forgiveness! Wyndham paid a lot for WM and they are still trying to recoup the loss. They have purchased back and actively trying to eliminate 2nd market for their timeshare. That is why they came up with Travelshare to differentiate their credits versus other sold online. 4) We've enjoyed all our WM vacations- even got married in Hawaii via Bonus Time 16 years ago (paid only 2k additional for about 30 ppl in 6 units, not happening now with Wyndham prices and limited assess). We miss all the last minute bonus time availability for our weekend trips. So yes I agree it was better with Trendwest but the onsite customer service is better now. I remember the days where late checkin was simply a key in a lockbox and no one at office after 10pm. But I also remember when our car broke down and Trendwest made accommodations to have us one more night - again not happening now with Wyndham. 5) Personal Choice does work! Booked Hawaii last minute for 1 week during Thanksgiving high season (resort not as nice as WM - more like airBnB condo but oceanfront) had to pay about $1k to supplement our limited credits but still worth it. 6) Had we moved to Shell years ago we would have lost money as Wyndham now owns Shell and we have access to their locations. Worldmark credits gives much better ROI as compared to Wyndham The Club, Shell and other timeshare if you have developers credits and enough to get you beyond standard - like Diamond or Platinum. 7) Any timeshare is only valuable if you are able to use it. So use it while you can. Compared to those who purchased 2nd vacation homes, we've gotten much better use of our timeshare with less hassle of maintenance etc. Also some of our friends simply lost their homes during slump in 2010 and few that held onto the vacation homes are barely breaking even now. 8) Don't expect to make profit from ANY timeshare. If you use it, it will give you value. Otherwise it's prepaid luxury vacation which you'll break even or make your ROI after 12-15 years if purchased retail. Buy second market and you should make ROI in 2-3years. It is something you can deed to your children but they must be able to afford maintenance fee which keeps rising. For us it was a valuable as we have had many family vacations, in resorts with kitchen (necessary with small children) and washer & dryer. That type of accommodation was not readily available when we purchased 20 years ago; however now with AIRBnB and RedWeek.com I would be willing to pay a little more at time of use and NOT be obligated to perpetual lifetime debt of maintenance fees. There’s also more availability and flexibility when booking as needed. Trendwest came up with flexible point system that changed timeshare and got a new generation of owners; timeshare industry itself needs to come up with new, more appealing options in order to get my children as owners otherwise they will all parish.
