The Athletic HQReviews of theathletic.com

You may cancel your The Athletic account at any time – however, there are no refunds for cancellation. To avoid auto-renewal, just go to link and cancel your plan. Stuck for another year for the full price. No email notification before the auto-renewal kicks in. No way to turn auto-renewal off unless cancelled. No refund after cancellation. What a joke.

The coverage of the teams I want to read about is almost non-existent. This was a waste of money and they won't refund a penny of it. In my search for a phone number for them (never found one) I did run across this interesting bit of information: They have a "C" rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Followed a link for a free 7 day trial, entered my details expect to have 7 days to cancel, was instantly charged for 1 month. Contacted the support email, was told we are sorry to see you go and we cant refund you!

I posted a critical review earlier but when I did finally hear from customer service my issue was dealt with extremely well.

Pretty much a scam. I created my account about 2-3 weeks ago to try out the free 1 month trial. I realised immediately that the website didn't interest me at all (it doesn't have any of the leagues or football teams I care about). I decided to cancel my subscription immediately (so i wouldn't forget later down the line) and as soon as i did, they charged my credit card £35 for absolutely no reason. They didn't even send me an email saying tgat they charged me and i had to check my own banking app to find out. I contacted their support demanding to be refunded, mistakes can happen, but all i got was silence. I must have sent them 5 emails and only ever got an automated response saying they would get back to me in 3 days... They never did. Luckily my bank reimbursed me. I would genuinely watch out because this is borderline a scam. Even if it was a genuine service, the articles they provide are worse than most free news websites and what you get is definitely not worse the high price.

I signed up for a 7 day free trial, mistakingly thinking it was a 1 month free trial. I realised my mistake within 1 hour of being billed and tried to cancel, or downgrade to a monthly subscription. I have been rejected by both the Apple App store, and had no response from the support email address at The Athletic... ZERO. I've since been offered exactly the same 12 month subscription at HALF the price, despite already being signed up unwillingly to the full price 12 month subscription. As a compromise, I asked to be given this price and have been ignored by their support team. As the company are US based you waive your UK consumer rights when you sign-up to their service. Unfortunately, that puts you at the mercy of their support team, which so far has been entirely unsupportive. I'd categorise this company as one to be careful of based on the above. Make sure you cancel your subscription the instant you take out the free trial, that way you retain full control over their access to your bank account. It's a pity as the content is good, just not £59.99 good I'm afraid. At that price I could watch all my sports content LIVE on legitimate subscription platforms like DAZN, which is better than reading about it. If you're considering a subscription to The Athletic, you've been warned. UPDATED: good content. Refund was initiated for bill after a royal struggle.
