I was charged for an auto renewal of £59.99 by the Athletic. I went through their customer service portal and requested a refund. One of their staff members, Hayley, could not have been more helpful and sorted out a cancellation and a refund very quickly. I understand others have had difficulty but I could not have had a better experience with their customer service

The best football site, bar none. For all those talking about auto renewals, that’s what you signed up for. Little hint, put a note in your diary/ outlook and take some responsibility for your life. You’ll find that cancelling before the auto renew will reveal an offer for £12 a year.

Brilliant. Definitely worth the subscription the writing is second to none, no adds, all sports covered in unbelievable detail.

Best UK football coverage out there

Aside from an unknown subscription, my interaction with The Athletic's customer service was wonderful. I had accessed the site once for a class project months ago and apparently signed up for a $59.99 subscription that was just charged yesterday. Now when I saw this charge, I panicked bc I wanted to get my money back, and dealing with refunds can be a painful process. Especially in this instance bc I am not an avid sports fan and was not sure how reputable The Athletic was. When I tried to contact through the cell, it was an automated voicemail that recommended me to write an email instead, for a quicker response. So I did just that. The first email response I received was an automated response, again, that asked for more information regarding my payment and which platform I used for the subscription. It made me feel uneasy to look at this long email and I thought, "here I go... another long, back and forth refund process." Surprisingly, as I was replying to the automated email, I received 2 more emails from The Athletic. One was a receipt for the $59.99 refund. The other was from "Jeffery" at The Athletic, thanking me for my business and provided details on my cancellation and refund. This interaction happened within 20 minutes of my first email. Needless to say, I was very satisfied with the quick service. Although I was skeptical at first & blindsided by the subscription, their ability to resolve the issue was excellent and smooth.

Saw that I had been charged 3 monthly subscriptions from my bank account after a free trial that I had cancelled. Sent them a polite email detailing this, and I received a swift reply apologising and advising of an immediately actioned refund of all 3 transactions. The article I did read during the free trial was actually excellent, and the bits I’ve seen on Twitter have been impressive too. Unfortunately there is so much out there that is free to read that there’s not really any need for me to pay for the service. Overall; impressed with the company and their attitude towards what was essentially a complaint. Nice way to turn it into a 5 star review!
