Their business model for startups is that they want you to bring along your own investors in the hope that those people will also become investors in other companies. All the while, they collect fees. You'll notice that actually seeing the startup through doesn't really matter, they just want to grow their investor base, not necessarily build companies.

I invested a couple K in Hylio and StartEngine. There is no way to get your money back out. It's not illiquid, it's just gone. This is definitely a scam and my only hope is to hop onto the class action suit that I've heard is a foot. Run away from this money pit.

As we are consistently trying to progress and ensure our investor's feedback is heard, we have launched a new platform as a part of our business called Marketplace. As mentioned, typically investors have to wait for an exit event like an acquisition or IPO to potentially see a return or liquidate their investment. However, we know investors would like the option to exit their investments sooner, so we launched StartEngine Marketplace. On Marketplace, a seller can make an offer to sell shares in a startup. They can specify the number of shares they’d like to sell and the price per share. A buyer can then choose to purchase all – or some – of the shares in the offer. If a buyer accepts a seller’s offer, the transaction will be facilitated by StartEngine’s broker-dealer via a 30 Day+ Transaction. Unlike public securities, shares in startups and privately held companies take a little more time and effort to transfer, up to 30 business days on average. Very poor organization and support for investors. They say they are sending emails for logging in and they don’t. Bookkeeping is slow. Very foggy allocations of money sent to them.
