Hello Sian, We're sorry that you are unhappy with the design of your Saxon 420; however, the noises that you're hearing are important safety features that we can't compromise on. The beeping that occurs when the hinged rail is lowering is to warn others at the bottom of the stairs that the rail is coming down. This is especially important for pets, children and the visually impaired. The beeping at the bottom of the stairs is to remind you to send the chair up to the top of the stairs to charge. If you leave the chair at the bottom, the batteries will eventually drain and you will need to have someone out to service the unit. One thing you can do, if you'd like to keep the chair at the bottom, is to flip the master power switch to stop the beeping and save the battery. Just be aware that the lift will not charge while at the bottom of the stairs. The "grinding noise" that you're hearing may simply be the motor powering your chair's swivel feature. But, if you're concerned, we recommend calling 1(800) 877-8247 to schedule a service call. Another option is to look into some of our newer units. We've released some great new models over the past few years, such as the 600 Siena with a Retractable Rail. While we're still very proud of our legacy products, Stannah stairlifts have improved significantly since the Saxon 420 and you may find that purchasing a newer unit alleviates many of your concerns.
