Sonder in Austin - South Congress
Run the other way. First of all, I show up at a place looking for the words "Sonder," but all I find is a place called the Lola Apartments. When I checked in with support, they told me that the location is not the Lola Apartments. They asked me to walk to an area behind a bar and look to the left. After dragging my luggage around the block, all I see is an empty lot and a wall. They claim that I went too far, so I turn back around, and I'm back where I started. I asked them again if I should enter the Lola Apartments. "No," they replied, "it's not the Lola Apartments," I asked a local about Sonder, and they were not aware of such a place. After an exhaustive search of 40 minutes, I'm back at the Lola Apartments because the Support team clearly has no idea where the location is either. Google maps doesn't do the place justice as it is located on a hill, and you can't get to it from the main drag. At this time, I'm ready to book an Uber to a nearby hotel, but I asked again, "Are you sure it's not the Lola Apartments?" Someone with more sense must have taken over the chat because they replied, "Yes, that's the place you're looking for." So I walk into the complex, and the second part of my search begins. With fourteen unlabeled buildings on the site, I have to find Building nine. I continue to walk around to each building to see the suite number, and I find Building eight and Building ten but not Building nine. I am disoriented and tired from a 4-hour flight and out of sorts at the midnight hour but I carry on. How did I know there were fourteen buildings on the site? Because I found thirteen after twenty minutes and found my building by a process of elimination. I am finally at the room trying to type a code into a keyless lock that will not respond and times out after five seconds. Upon entering the room, it finally dawned on me that I had booked an "Airbnb style" place and was staying at someone's apartment. The walls were dirty, and a rustic rug in the bedroom was painful to walk on. As the sun streamed into my room the following day, I realized that the bedroom floor was dirty, and the "rustic rug" was there to cover the dirt. I knew at that moment that I couldn't complete my stay at this location for another night. I checked out early and booked a hotel for the second day. Save yourself the trouble and book a "real" hotel.
