We booked "Above the Clouds" with Colonial Properties over six months in advance. We choose carefully knowing we wanted to stay in the Wears Valley area based on our trip from the year before, which we had booked with Colonial Properties without a single problem or incident. The time came and we drove over 700 miles to reach our dream destination. When we arrived to "Above the Clouds" everything was perfect and the view absolutely amazing. It was going to be the start of great vacation until we received a phone call from Colonial Properties stating there was a problem with our cabin. We couldn't understand what it could be, but the lady on the phone said that while the housekeepers were there that the "well ran dry" when filling the hot tub. We thought this was incredibly odd because the house keepers left as we arrived and we checked and the water was running fine. We were told that we'd have to move to another cabin, that we'd be extremely happy with it, that it was in Gatlinburg. We were reluctant being familiar with the area (we picked Wears Valley for a reason), but we packed up and head over to "The Bright Side of the Road". When we arrived the cleaning crew that had just left "Above the Clouds" was there cleaning the house. We sat and waited about 40 minutes for them to finish while getting more and more disgusted we had to leave "Above the Clouds". "The Bright Side of the Road" is a "dated" house with some modern upgrades. While it may work for some, it just wasn't what we had planned staying in for a week long vacation in the Smoky Mountains. There is "no view". other than trees, but you can most certainly hear the busy town of Gatlinburg below. The housekeepers were in a hurry getting everything ready and it appeared they had shampoo'd the carpets as well, because the carpet in the basement were soaking wet (at least we hope it was from shampooing). At this point everyone was worn out and it was getting late and while we were not happy, we decided we'd go to the Colonial Properties Office the next morning to see what could be done. Not much sleep was had that night, for we could not the views from "Above the Clouds" out of our heads. We arrived the next morning at Colonial Properties office in Pigeon Forge and explained to the nice lady at the front desk that where they moved us to was just not what we expected at all. She asked why we were moved from "Above the Clouds" and we told her that we were told there was "problems with the well". She didn't seem to want find out more or even see if it could be resolved so we could "move" back. Instead she said she could look for another cabin. We inquired about "Unforgettable View" having quickly looked on Colonial Properties website before to see if there was anything with mountain views that wasn't booked. She looked it up and saw that it would be available but would have to speak with the manager because it was a 5 bedroom vs the 4 bedroom we had originally booked (over six months ago) and there might be a price difference. We were certainly not going to pay extra for being moved from our "dream" cabin to something we had no choosing in. When she came back, she said that we could indeed move to "Unforgettable View" and that we could take our time that housekeeping would make it over there by noon. This was acceptable for us, for we planned to go into the National Park for the Day. We packed up our stuff and made our way over to "Unforgettable View" later that afternoon. As we got closer to the cabin location, we quickly realized this was going to be a mistake as well. "Unforgettable View" is situated among several other cabins and upon first inspection is very "well used". There is indeed a view of the mountains, but you have to put blinders on in order to block out the "neighborhood". Now, this cabin might be fine for a large group that is just there to sleep and shower, but we had planned some of our vacation relaxing in the mountain cabin. It's why we choose "Above the Clouds" in Wears Valley to begin with. Several things need addressing at "Unforgettable View". First all the TV's in the place except the living room area are old 15 inch tube TVs, some with cable boxes, some with not (those with out simply don't work). Yeah you're not supposed to watch TV on vacation, but it's nice to have for news/weather plus it just felt tacky to us. They'd be better off to just completely remove them. Second the place could use a new dishwasher, it's scuffed up and stained, and again, looks tacky. Third, the carpenter bees (what we call them) are completely destroying the outside of the house. Lastly, there is no privacy in this house at all. You can not move anywhere in the house without making noise. You can hear when someone walks, talks, goes to the bathroom, or takes a shower from any bedroom in the house. If your group has early risers, everyone in the house is going to be up with them because of the noise this house makes. Luckily the Smoky Mountains has a lot to offer for entertainment and my family was able to still pull off a decent vacation, but it was really disheartening to go through what we did. Had we never saw "Above the Clouds", maybe we wouldn't of been so upset, but it truly was our dream cabin that our family will never get to experience. Our family wants to return to the Smoky Mountains, but we will not book with Colonial Properties again. While we had a great experience with them our first year we visited, this last visit has left a lasting impression on the rest of our family that we'll never get over. My advice with anyone wanted to book with Colonial Properties is to use caution and not have high expectations, or else you may have your dreams crushed on arrival.
