Hi—thank you for your 4-star review! Yes, locking the safety gate is important and we do recommend locking the safety gate when it is extended or retracted. The gate does not lock until you use the push-and-then-turn lock mechanism. This allows you to open or close the gate as much or as little as you wish before re-latching and locking the gate without any interruption to the smooth operation.
