I had an account with Santander several years ago but left as they were so utterly useless. In the hope that they had improved their customer service in the intervening period, I thought I'd give them another go as they have an account that looked attractive but which can only be opened at a branch or online. As my nearest branch is 12 miles and half an hour drive away, I decided to phone. Held on for ages then had to give up as I had to go out. Am now back and trying again. Have been holding on for half an hour. And I've selected the number for their "new accounts" - where you think they would make an effort to impress! Still, at least I've found out they are still providing as bad a service as they ever did so will go elsewhere!

After an hour of waiting on the phone to try to open a bank account, in the last 5 minutes of waiting on the call I opened an account with Virgin Money online - that was how the experience should have been. I gave up with no answer from Santander, but now I have a much easier online account. P.S. I could have gone in branch - they had an appointment in 2 months which was convenient for me. Useless

I've used a Kalixa pre-loaded credit card for a couple of years now, but recently received an email to say that the service was ending, but offering instead the opportunity to transfer the remaining funds into a mobile-based scheme called KiTTi run by Santander. There were just a few pounds left, and it was a couple of weeks before a holiday where I needed this sort of back-up, so I went ahead. It was clearly explained that the system was mobile-based, but at no point was it also mentioned that the app. that runs it has a serious restriction: it won't run on rooted Android phones - which include a considerable number of Chinese-made phones, mine among them. So they now had my money, and I had no access to it. I sent an email immediately, which three weeks later, has still yet to be answered. Two days later, I tried to phone: it took three goes to get through, and when I did, it was to someone for whom English was very obviously not the strongest of languages, and who seemed neither able to understand the points I was trying to make, nor to explain how to proceed to a resolution. I was told that the passwords and the answers to the security questions I had chosen were not the same as those on their system, even though I was reading them out from the very piece of paper than I'd first written them on. I was then told that I would have to forward them proofs of identity in a reply to the email that they would send me after the phone call had ended. I'm still waiting for that, too, more than two weeks later. Thankfully, the amount that's involved is small: but had it been a more significant sum this could have been disastrous. This appears to be a complete dereliction of duty and disregard for a customer, and has destroyed any faith in their competence as a financial institution, so far as I am concerned.

Awful bank, glad I'm no longer with these! Very poor customer service, constant problems with this company, keep away!

I opened the above account and got £30 cashback. I moved all of my banking and direct debits over, paying the £2 monthly fee which was (just about) covered by the cashback on my bills. Now that they've attracted a massive amount of the current account market share, they have now hiked the fee by 250% to £5 per month, meaning that I will now lose out even with the cashback. The interest rate is pretty average (3% v 6% elsewhere) but they allow you to deposit £20k at this rate which is higher than elsewhere. I feel they've been quite crafty and disingenuous so I will be switching away this month.
