While I have played guitar for a number of years and have played in several bands you can never and should never stop learning. I felt like I was in a rut a few years back and started trying a few guitar lesson sites, actually quite a few sites now that I think about it, along with Youtube videos. While they all have good things to offer they also have some negatives. It might be cost, lack of guidance, overwhelming information, little feedback, wrong musical style, etc. I will say this, try to pick a program and stick with it. I made the mistake of jumping around to way too many sites. With that said, I saw an ad for Pickup Music on Facebook, it looked promising so I gave it a try. So far I have been pleasantly surprised. Since I'm not a beginner I was worried that the lessons would be too rudimentary for me, but I found there is ample information for intermediate and advanced players. This is not necessarily a site to learn note for note particular 'famous' songs, there are an abundance of sites and videos for that, this site is to learn the techniques and information to play and understand how those songs are structured. The lessons are well prepared and the information is presented in small bites so it's pretty easy to retain (with practice of course). There are numerous learning pathways to choose from and 'Grades' within each pathway to complete. I started with the CAGED pathway as a review of the fretboard. I have also started lessons on the lead style of David Gilmour and rhythm playing of Jimi Hendrix. The pathways are self paced so you take as much time as you need. When you complete a grade you have an opportunity to record yourself playing along with a live band. You can then upload the video and receive feedback on your playing. They also provide a quiz at the end of each grade so you can test your knowledge. There are forums, a chat interface, emails, online events, overall they do a great job of providing a sense of community. I have only been a member for about 2 months but I can see they are constantly striving to introduce new features and make improvements. Just recently they started providing guitar giveaway incentives for completing grades. I believe this site is as close to having a live teacher as possible at a fraction of the cost.

This website is fantastic. I was stuck in such a plateau of my guitar playing, and these courses and lessons have done so much to help playing fun again and to help me finally make some improvements in my playing. In going through the lessons I have picked up so many helpful drills, licks/riffs, and pieces of knowledge (how chords are structured, relative minors, etc.). The instructors all have a great attitude. I cannot say enough good things.

I truly enjoy my journey with pickup music. The instructors are friendly and provide very useful tips and tricks. More importantly, if you're a person who likes structure, this is a company for you. I have played guitar for some time and these guys are able to put every piece of the puzzle together for me. I also appreciate the communication from the team and their responsiveness to my questions.

I joined Pickup Music to use the 14 day free trial to take their neo-soul masterclass and learn a couple new chords and techniques for free. 5 months later, I am still a member. I have been able to really learn and unlock my fret board more than I ever before. Anyone looking to expand on their skills and exploring new genres, I highly recommend this.

Allow me to start by saying I'm 65 years old. I've been a casual player since adolescence. Play a while, bury it for a few years only to return and start over, essentially. I started when there were teachers and books and can proudly say I've witnessed at-home learning develop into what it is today. I've purchased lessons from online resources only to find they're a product you purchase, similar to a pedal or amp or even a guitar. Lifeless. Pickup music is far different. The daily lessons arranged in the format is perfect for continued, PACED, learning. I have never enjoyed nor improved so consistently as I have since becoming a Pickup Music member. I sometimes leave it for days as I take on other learning but when I return, it's always back to where I left off, simple to back up a day or two, and continue forward. The genres are so exciting and you know they are there waiting on you anytime your ready. I've honestly never tried their competition but I see no need to. As long as life and health permit, I'll be aPickup Music member.
