Our First and Last Purchase at Ethen Allen
This was our first purchase from Ethan Allen, and we are extremely disappointed with its customer service and our overall experience with the company. We purchased a custom-made bed frame and a foundation on May 4, 2026, at the Mission Valley store. For context, we're also expecting our new baby. The interior designer informed us that the bed should be ready for delivery within six to eight weeks. I figured that would give us plenty of time to prepare before the birth. Our original estimated delivery date was July 6, 2026—10 weeks after our purchase date. On July 10, we still had not heard from Ethan Allen, so I called and was told that the bed had been delayed because of the “Fourth of July holiday rush”—whatever that means. Then, on July 16, we were told that the bed had been shipped from the manufacturing facility and was on its way to the distribution center. However, on July 23, I was notified that the estimated delivery date had been moved to August 10. I later found out that our bed had not been shipped on July 16; it was not shipped until July 26. On July 29, the estimated delivery date was changed again, this time to August 17. This was the third time the delivery date had been changed, which was extremely disappointing and frustrating. On August 5, after repeatedly calling Ethan Allen, we were offered a loaner bed while we waited for ours to be delivered. I then had the most unpleasant exchange with the company’s delivery and scheduling team while arranging the loaner bed. They wanted us to pay even more money just to have the loaner bed and our foundation delivered. Since we had already paid 30% of the total amount, I did not feel comfortable making another payment of approximately $400 as we still did not know where our bed frame was, as no one seemed to have any tracking information for the furniture. The lady on the phone couldn't care less about my situation, and showed no effort at all to try to resolve the situation. When I called her back the second time, she even hung up on me immediately after I told her my name. Later, the interior designer from the store called me and told me that they'll waive the delivery fee for me and that I'll just have to pay off the remaining balance on the foundation, which I accepted. Finally, on August 20, Ethan Allen contacted us to say that the bed had been delivered to the distribution center. By this point, we were completely disappointed with the company and filed a complaint with corporate. They offered to waive the delivery fee and provide an additional $200 discount on the order. Alternatively, we could cancel the order, but they would keep our 30% deposit as a “restocking fee.” At that point, we felt that we had no choice but to accept the offer so that we could finally receive the bed. It then took them two days to send me a revised invoice reflecting the updated amount due. Our delivery is now scheduled for September 10. They said they'll call us two days in advance to give us a three-hour delivery window. We were also told that there would be a $100 rescheduling fee if we canceled within two days of the delivery date. Fortunately, they had the sense to let us know that we would not be charged the rescheduling fee. This has been the most ridiculous and unfortunate experience I have ever had with any company. Not only is Ethan Allen’s customer service horrible, but its internal communication is also extremely poor. If you are reading this and trying to decide between Ethan Allen and Bassett, go with Bassett. We purchased a non-custom couch from Bassett in July and received it within a week. They even sent us a very nice thank-you card with cleaning instructions for the couch.
