DO NOT USE CHECKR
PLEASE do not use Checkr to conduct background checks with your company. I submitted two separate background checks with two different mental health companies, on October 18 and October 25. As of today, my background check is still not complete and I have been told I’m in ‘the final stages’ for the last two months. NO ONE through Checkr has been able to provide me with specific details about my report, aside from continuing to give copy and pasted or generic responses. Their new slogan is ‘would you like me to escalate this to a manager?’ Managers are only available via email and also just provide generic answers to anything you type. Checkr continues to blame the county courts saying that because of Michigan’s New Clean Slate Law, courts have either delayed or paused their processing of background reports. This is a misguided interpretation of what’s going on. WZZM13 News ran a story on them and one of the Clerks from the Kent County office states ‘name search tools are not a mandated function of the court, vendors performing background checks have several alternatives available to them to access the full information they require, so while our online tool was preferable, its modification does not prevent them (Checkr) from completing their services’. Checkr just continues to say that they are unable to complete the background check because the ‘public access website is down and we are at the mercy of the courts, when in reality the AI technology they use doesn’t allot for actual human beings to call the courts, or do in person visits, to gather up information needed to complete their checks or check in for updates. Checkr just continues to tell me to watch my portal account, which has pushed the ‘estimated’ completion date of their report back for the last two months. This has resulted in me having to push my start date back 4 times now and a substantial loss of income. I had already left my last job after signing my official contract and getting my start date. I get a call 3 days before I’m supposed to start, saying that they have to push my date back because of the incomplete background check. Meanwhile, no one from Checkr can provide me with an actual date the background check will be completed, steps they have taken to conduct alternative methods to complete my background check with this new clean slate law, or any information on my report and what specific counties they are needing information from still at this point. I finally found a number through a lawyer’s office to reach out to them via phone, and they were still just as unhelpful. One of the ladies on the phone tells me ‘we’re not allowed to give information out over the phone, or else we’d be out of compliance and I could lose my job’. An ABSOLUTE LIE. Other background vendors have given me information, after doing their verification process just like Checkr, about the status of my background report. The lawyer I have obtained has also stated that Checkr is able to see the information online for my Michigan counties, and could also pick up the phone and CALL the court clerk to obtain whatever information they needed. DO NOT let Checkr fool you into thinking it’s all someone else’s fault. The company is full of incompetent people who made HUGE mistakes in how they’ve setup their tech start up, and now are in HUGE trouble from numerous lawsuits from individuals who have lost jobs because of inaccurate information or loss of income due to inability to complete background checks.
