About Ants on a Melon

Ants on a Melon (AOAM) is a small, independent company based in Springfield, Oregon that designs and hand-assembles modular LED light tools for flow artists, light painters, performers, and festival-goers around the world. Founded by Master Toymaker Joel Pinkham in 2012, AOAM blends artistry and technology to build gear that runs on one programmable platform. The core of the system is the RGB Critter BT, a color-changing flashlight that powers more than 200 twist-on tools and accessories. From that one light you can build fiber optic light whips (the BitWhip and Double BitWhip), light painting tools like blades and tubes, saber and staff kits, fiber optic costume lighting, and more. One light becomes a whole kit, so you carry less and spend less over time. The RGB Critter BT was named the number one RGB flashlight for light painting by Stephen Knight Photography and earned an Editor's Choice from Photofocus. With a small, passionate team, no outside investors, a 2-year warranty on Critter-powered kits, and real human support, AOAM focuses on thoughtful design, creative freedom, durability, and staying closely connected to the community that inspires it.

10/10 service and product
My whip came in super quickly and the packaging was safe and secure. It also came with a user setup instructions and a warranty. Waiting on my sleeve wrap to get here before playing with it too much but I love it already!

First impressions
The package arrived today 2026-03-27, everything that should be there is in the shipment. So far I have unpacked and tried everything. Communication with the store was excellent. As for light painting, I am at the beginning. I will research everything and learn. I made a small mistake and that is that I did not read properly what is in the kit. The Pro Kit only contains short rods that model the light and one longer clear one. I will have to order longer tubes that model the light and another longer clear one in time. I am satisfied and can recommend the store.

Thank you so much, Martin! We’re really glad everything arrived smoothly and that you’re off to a great start with light painting. Appreciate your note about the kit as well. As you explore more, adding longer tubes will definitely open up even more possibilities. Thanks again for the recommendation, and enjoy the learning process 🙂

Very good lamp
Very good lamp, with multiple modes and levels of lightning, easy to use with app. But pretty expansive because of actual american taxes

Thanks for the great review! We're really happy to hear you're enjoying the RGB Critter BT, especially the different lighting modes and the app control. Just to clarify for anyone reading, the extra charges some customers see are import duties or VAT charged by the destination country rather than American taxes from us. Unfortunately those are outside our control. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and hope your RGB Critter BT continues to bring you lots of fun!

They have been absolutely amazing
They have been absolutely amazing. They have a warranty for their product that they actually uphold to! They have great customer service. They’re fast! Reliable, and the product that they have to offer is top of the line! Whether you’re light painting and taking amazing photos! To flowing (like I do) with it and their fiber optic attachment. Which comes in regular and sparkle fibers!

I have been buying gear from AOAM for…
I have been buying gear from AOAM for years. So, when they came out with the new Critter through a Kickstarter campaign, I signed on. It took quite awhile for the Critters to actually come to market as there were issues with supplies and such, but Joel kept his investors informed throughout the process. When we finally got the product, Critter 2.0, it was heads-and-tails better than the first version. At first it was a little mind-boggling to figure it out, but an update and a manual made using it sooooo much better. Plus, they have continued to add innovative tools to their site, including adapters that play well with other light painting manufacturer's tools. That, and stellar responsiveness, what more can you ask for?

Andrea, thank you so much for taking the time to share this. It has been quite a journey from the original Critter to the BT version, and hearing that the improvements have made such a difference for you means a lot. I remember how long that Kickstarter stretch felt, and I truly appreciated everyone’s patience and support while we worked through supply issues and refined the design. We are always working to make things easier to use, more versatile, and more fun, so it makes me really happy to hear that the updates, manuals, and new tools have helped. And thank you for noticing the adapters too. Building bridges between different light painting systems is something I love doing. I’m grateful you’ve been with us for years, and I’m always here if you need anything or have ideas for future tools. Joel Master Toy Maker Ants on a Melon
