Rep Lied about payoff times for current debts
Spoke with a rep about possibly consolidating my debt. I had received a mailing and the rate advertised was significantly lower than what I was paying (they were offering 3%, and I am paying a fixed 7% on the majority of my debt). He informed me that, with the minimum payments on a card assuming the rate doesn't change it would take 15 years to pay off or we would need to pay double the minimum to pay it off any faster, which did not sound correct to me. I just ran the calculations on it in excel (principle + interest rate/12 months per year - payment = new principle for the next month's calculations) and he literally doubled the payoff time in our conversation. It was obvious from talking with him their script is to scare customers into signing up with them without really thinking. Please double check all numbers they give you about pay off times before signing with them, it took all of 2 minutes to enter the formulas into excel and drag them down until the balance was 0 to double check what he was telling me. While I have no doubt that they can help some people in dire situations, please run some simple calculations to determine if they are telling the truth.
