This platform makes reading torturous.
The system here is terrible. I do my best not to leave only hateful feedback online but I can't think of any good qualities of this platform. From the point of view as a student who would normally read a lot and finish all my books, on this platform I have switched out the last 8 books I read as soon as possible. This is because, one, when selecting a book you are given only 4 book options that hardly ever change. While sparx claims that helps students pick I could not disagree more. From other students in my class we all find ourselves messing around with setting and changing our "genre preferences" to try to get a different book option. However the system hardly considers your selected preferences. I'm in a top set class. However despite that on this platform around 60% of people don't even do homework because the process is so painful. Every page your given 3 questions if you screw up you lose countless points, which is a problem as you need points to complete tasks and track reading. Questions range from simple to vocabulary specific niche questions that just feel impossible if reading normally. One quality I would have considered good was a Gold Reader system. This meant if you read a little bit extra you could read your own books and track them for homework. This was a trust system so you had to read a lil extra each week, which felt painful but you could see the gold reader pass getting closer. And once you got it you can read your own book and log it and the teacher can track your progress and all was great! Until this year they removed all of it. "Gold Reader" is a celebratory achievement. You can still log books, but there is no reward in it, and it doesn't contribute to homework, so why would you? Sparx reader claims to support students reading. It doesn't. The system fully replaces their reading with something they'll hate. It makes reading like suffering where you just want to finish your homework task. I am sorry to leave such a hateful comment here. I have never written anything near as hateful as this. But in this scenario I have nothing positive anymore. If your even considering using this in your school for every one of your students sake I beg you to reconsider if you want to promote reading for pleasure this will annihilate any chance for you. I believe this platform is worse then completely unmonitored reading for students and their reading.
