Excellent. However, I was unable to respond to my sitter’s Rover.com messages on Rover in Hong Kong. But we texted and it was fine.

Rover made finding care for my dog so easy and relieved a ton of stress. Knowing my girl was safe with someone I could trust allowed me to enjoy vacation so much more.

I had a very disappointing experience with Rover support that made me question how much the platform actually supports the sitters who make the service possible. I cancelled a booking about 12 hours before the scheduled start because the client’s communication toward me became disrespectful and made me uncomfortable continuing the service. Before cancelling, I contacted Rover support and spoke with a representative to explain the situation. During that conversation, I specifically told them I was concerned the client might leave a negative review because based on his attitude, I expected he would be angry about the cancellation. I was reassured that it would be okay and that the situation would be handled. Based on that guidance, I trusted that prioritizing my safety and well-being was the right decision. However, the client did leave a 1-star review, and Rover refused to remove it despite having access to the full conversation and the context behind the cancellation. What was especially frustrating is that Rover acknowledged the client may have been out of town and inconvenienced by the cancellation, which suggests his perspective was taken into account. My experience and the way I was spoken to, however, did not seem to receive the same consideration. There were also animal welfare concerns that contributed to my discomfort with the booking. The arrangement involved the dog being left alone in a crate for multiple days with only brief walks scheduled. As someone who takes animal care seriously, this raised concerns for me as well. Rover promotes safety and trust within its community, but in this situation I felt misled. I reached out to support beforehand specifically to ensure I was handling the situation appropriately and to express my concern about a retaliatory review. I was reassured that it would be okay, only to later learn that the review would remain and could negatively impact my ability to receive future bookings. Sitters should be able to remove themselves from situations involving disrespectful communication or animal welfare concerns without feeling that their livelihood could be damaged as a result. I hope Rover reevaluates how these situations are handled so that both pet welfare and sitter safety are taken seriously.
