The trip was mostly gorgeous but the way they handled an interpersonal conflict in our group left an extremely sour taste in my mouth. They treated something as "he said she said" even though there were lots of witnesses and it was a pattern of behavior. They refused to separate people effectively, the woman involved was given the option to stay in a cheap hotel separate from the rest of the group while the man was allowed to stay in the main housing after driving her to tears multiple times. Again, multiple witnesses to each incident of this happening and Remote year did significantly less than what I would call the bare minimum. Remote years reply here is a lie. They only interviewed two of the parties involved and did not interview any of the other witnesses.

Thank you for providing your feedback to our team. As always, our priority at Remote Year is to ensure that all of our program participants feel safe and comfortable. Community is at the center of everything that we do, and we always seek to curate inclusive communities based on mutual respect. When made aware of this issue, our Remote Year staff took appropriate and immediate measures to understand what had occurred, including an investigation and interview with all parties involved. While we cannot share the details due to privacy for all participants, we want to make it clear that we take every allegation seriously and do not hesitate to remove participants who are found violating our Code of Conduct. As always, we will continue to monitor all current and future programs to ensure our communities align with and uphold our code of conduct and that Remote Year continues to be a community people are proud to be a part of.

Remote Year in Medellin was great. Loved the city and the workspace and the remotes and the crew. Everyone was super interesting and fun to hang out with. It was great to make connections and friendships during our stay there. The different events were well organized and thoughtful. The first weekend after we arrived we should have not scheduled the San Andes trip as most people wanted to settle in. So suggestion would be to do something locally that first weekend to get a feel for the city and get to know everyone. The apartments were clean and the views and balconies were greatly appreciated. I would totally recommend it. I am planning on becoming a remote year citizen.

A week at Lake Atitlan will change your life! That is no exaggeration. There's a local saying that goes "once you visit the lake, it has a way of bringing people back". And I couldn't agree more. I can't really put my finger on it...whether its the dormant volcanoes in the surrounding the lake, the fact that the lake is a mile high in altitude, the amazing coffee, chocolate, and local produce, or lush forests. Whatever it is, I am sold on "lake life". On top of all of that, the entire Selina Lake Atitlan property was reserved for the retreat. It was such a treat to have access to the entire space all to ourselves. The People. The Places. The Retreat. People: I couldn't of asked for a better group of human beings to spend the week with. It was said numerous times throughout the retreat, but the sheer number of high quality, like-minded, and open hearted people was special. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each person and the thing that I am impacted most by is hearing all the stories, struggles, and obstacles that people had endured in the past year. It was such a special time to spend with complete strangers, where we all pulled down the walls we all normally have up, and just embrace community and vulnerability. Beyond everything else, its the people that I will remember and the memories we made and that will continue on in my minds/hearts. The Place: Like I said earlier, Lake Atitlan is not just beautiful, but also provides a deep spiritual connection to the land. First off, the various lake cities that surround the lake provide endless things to do and explore. The reliance on boat ferries to navigate vs cars and paved roads, is a nice break from living in the US. Experiencing the various towns and the unique Guatemalan culture is such a treat. And I am burying the lead here by not mentioning the two volcanoes that are impossible to miss from Panahachel. It brings a sense of calm, peace, and perspective. The Retreat: The schedule of the retreat was a nice blend of workshops, meals, and free time. I enjoyed the intention setting workshops where we came together as a group to reflect, re-evaluate, and to share the thoughts, insights, and revelations we had come to. I appreciated all the meals that we were served and a special thanks to the Selina staff that were so welcoming, hospitable, and accommodating. And lastly, the experiences that the RY Staff were able to provide were amazing: local coffee tasting, shaman ceremony, sound healing, permaculture farm, and spa/sauna. They were experiences that I would not have been able to find on my own and I felt a deep connection to the people we met on the island and to partner along in their journey and appreciate their way of life. This was definitely a highlight of the trip! In the end, the week spent in Lake Atitlan will be one that I will never forget and will be on my mind for the next several weeks. Being back home, in front of my computer, grabbing coffee at my local Starbucks and going back my normal day....it really has me wondering...Should I just sell all my stuff and live on the lake!?!?!? It sounds crazy, but after talking to ex-pat after ex-pat, they seem like my kinda crazy. But whether you sell all your stuff, at least put Lake Atitlan on your bucket list of places to visit. And if you wanna double down, sign up for a retreat with RY, because trust me .... there will be many more retreats to come!

I just completed my first Remote Year experience and it exceeded all of my expectations! The Alma Retreat in Guatemala was the perfect opportunity to connect with myself and my peers on a deeper level. It was a beautiful week to rest and recharge while sharing in adventures that will last a lifetime. The staff was beyond welcoming and engaging. They handled all of the logistics and made everything so easy. It was a great trip and provided great value for money. Hope to see you on a future RY trip!

I have now completed two retreats with RY, and I plan to show up to as many as I can make happen. The staff is phenomenal, made up of engaging, organized, intelligent, and incredibly interesting humans. I knew I would love RY when I realized I wanted to be friends with the staff as soon as I met them! Tyler and Tue have been a part of both retreats, and if (read: when) you decide to take part in a program, I urge you to go out of your way to meet them. RY attracts the type of people I want in my life, and I have made some wonderful friends out of my two experiences. I'm looking forward to participating in longer programs in the future - at this point, I trust RY with my development both personally and professionally.

I completed a four month program in 2018 and it was inexplicably life-changing. The entire program was well-organized and, for someone new to longer travel, I was a little nervous but they made it SO easy. I also just completed a RY retreat in Guatemala which was incredible for reflection and connection. I am now doing one month in CDMX and loving it so far! I highly recommend RY for both seasoned travelers and people new to travel who may need a little extra support. I look forward to many more adventures with RY — I already have my eye on upcoming programs!
